There are those of us who prefer the night. Those of us who feel that it just isn't appropriate to play a day-glow green guitar. There are members among us who would say that a flashy silver axe just won't cut it. Fortunately for us, Gibson has been busy.
Gibson's line of Gothic guitars are all beautifully made, and there is a cut for every Gibson shopper; Flying V's, X's, even a gothic Les Paul.
The Gothic SG is a natural inclusion in the series and has one of the most appealing finishes available. The guitar is a dark grey with black pickgaurd and headstock, with a moon and star inlay at the 12th fret, but you can see the picture.
More important than aesthetics however is quality. I've never played a Gibson SG that really sucked, and the gothic is no exception. Featuring 2 pickups (490R and 490T) 2 volume and 2 tone knobs, Tune-o-matic bridge, and a haunting feel all around this guitar produces some particularly crunchy sounds that only the 490R/490T combo can produce. Beautiful for rythmn or lead, especially in Rock/Metal, the SG is a favorite of countless guitarists, including Angus Young of AC/DC.
The body is of course cut in the SG style and truly lives up to its title of "solid guitar." Making a guitar out of mahogany (the neck is also mahogany) tends to imbalance a guitar, but Gibson has compensated rather well. The Gothic is a touch body heavy but in a good way, and it holds its weight well in a strap.
Overall the gothic is an excellent lower end SG and a great budget rythmn guitar (not too shabby at lead either). For beginning guitarists this is an excellent investment: it will last you your lifetime and gibson guitars have a general tendency to be very reliable. Mid level guitarists will appreciate it's steady sound and consistant feel. Professional players can have no end of fun on any SG, and the Gothic is no exception.
Not to mention it looks really good.
