Pros: smells nice, easy to apply, feels soothing
Cons: more nicks, lots of red bumps and irritation, not moisturizing enough for sensitive areas
With summer on its way (I love the 80-degree weather weve been having on the east coast), I thought Id refresh my hair-removal supplies. Ive been pondering waxing, but it just sounds too painful and memories of my last eyebrow waxing debacle steer me far from that method. Many depilatory creams burn my skin and smell awful. Plus, with a toddler banging on the bathroom door, its hard to stand around in my birthday suit for 5-10 minutes BEFORE showering. So, its back to the shaving basics for me. Though I was a long-time soap user, I now rely on shave gel and I was hoping this new Bikini Protection one would give me a nice close, unirritated shave.
Gillette Satin Care Bikini Protection Shave Gel comes in a seven-ounce, metallic-blue, pressurized can. The cap is pink plastic and, when unsheathed, reveals a large, thumb-sized depressor tab.
The gel itself is light blue in color and has a refreshing, soapy scent. It lathers up well and stays in place. It contains cucumber, chamomile, and silk "to provide ultra skin protection and moisturization especially in your bikini area." This particular formula is fairly new and harder to find than other Satin Care shave gels, but is available at many drugstores and discount chains. It retails for about $2.50.
Water (EAU), Palmitic Acid, Triethanolamine, Isopentane, Glycerl Oleate, Stearic Acid, Isobutane, Sorbitol, Fragrance, Hydroxyethycellulose, PEG-90M, Silk Amino Acids, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ethoxydiglycol, Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Silica, Chamomilia Recitta, Butylene Glycol, Glucose, Phenonip, Caramel, Sodium Banzoate, Potassium Sorbate, BHT(Butylhydroxytoluene), Bisabolol, Blue 1
As usual, after shampooing and conditioning my hair (the bunch on my head), I apply shave gel to my armpits and bikini area. While I tip my head back to rinse out the conditioner, I give the shave gel time to soak into my skin and do its moisturizing thing. Then with my Schick disposable razor, which has always worked well for me, I shave away. Then I sit in the bath to shave my legs.
This gel feels really soft and soothing on my skin. It applies easily and foams up quickly. I need less of it than I do of my favorite shave gel. It washes away clean and seems to help me get a close shave. Unfortunately, I have noticed a few extra nicks and cuts on my legs since I started using it. That may be attributed to my faster than usual shaving routine (thanks to my toddler), but I definitely noticed a change right after I switched from using my sensitive skin formula Skintimate to this shave gel.
The scent is light and refreshing. It isnt fruity or flowery, just clean and soapy. That is a nice change from some overpowering shave gel scents.
My main problem with this shave gel occurs about a 1/2 hour after drying off and getting dressed. Though it does an adequate job on my legs and armpits without any irritation (other than the more frequent nicks), it does not give my bikini line the protection it needs. Little red bumps start to break out all over my bikini line and upper thighs and I get very itchy, which only makes the little bumps bigger. Ive tried using moisturizers and/or anti-itch creams afterward and neither seems to help. I even used my husbands Neutrogena aftershave lotion, which helped a little for about an hour or two. I normally have sensitive skin and occasionally have this same reaction with other shave gels, but it seems like a pandemic with this one. Red bumps and blotches on my bikini line is definitely not a style I want to sport at the beach or in the bedroom, for that matter.
For a gel made especially for bikini lines, it doesnt moisturize nearly enough and it makes me break out in red blotches. As a shave gel for legs, its adequate but doesnt seem as moisturizing or protecting as my Skintimate shave gel.
