The Bottom Line: The Gillette Sensor 3 gives me a close shave with little to no irritation, and it convinced me to switch over permanently from an electric razor.
DavidK93's Full Review: Gillette Sensor3 Disposable Razors for Sensitive S...
I was quite fond of my electric razor, but it eventually died on me. I ordered a newer model as a replacement, but I purchased Gillette Sensor 3 disposable razors for the interim. However, due to various failures of the Norelco website and distribution system, I made the change permanent.
The razors are very easy to use. I had only ever used a disposable razor for about a week, years ago, when I forgot my electric razor over Thanksgiving, so I had virtually no experience using one. But I found that the swiveling head of the razor oriented to the planes of my face, no matter how I held the handle. The handle itself is coated in textured rubber, making it easy to maintain a grip even when my hand is wet and soapy.
Each razor has a clear plastic guard over its head. I assume that this feature is designed both for safety and for protection of the product. The plastic guard tightens on with an excellent snap fit. It does sometimes come off if I throw a razor into my travel bag with various other objects and then carry it around for a few hours, but in general it's a good enough fit that I can actually pick up the razor by the plastic guard.
Shaving my face with the Gillette Sensor 3 is amazing. Across most of my face, I just need to make a single pass over each spot to remove the stubble. With the swiveling head, I can start in front of my ear at my hairline, continue down to my jawline, and shave my jowl and neck as well, all in one motion. There are a few trickier areas where, originally, I would discover a few minutes later that some hair had been left. This included the ridge of my jaw, the underside of my cheekbones, right under my hairline, and very close to my lips. So now I simply go back over those areas before I rinse my face, and the problem is solved.
Shaving with an actual razor gives a much closer shave than using an electrical razor. To the touch, many electric razors do seem to get your skin just as smooth as a disposable. However, the proof comes about six hours later; for me, a face shaved with an electric razor would already be sporting a hint of five o'clock shadow while a face shaved with the razor is safe for another six hours. Of course, current style says that a bit of stubble is just fine, so I normally make sure I shave the day before I plan to look my best, rather than the day of. In general, I shave every two or three days, but I'd have to shave daily if I wanted to look smooth all the time. That comes of being Jewish and Italian.
The one drawback to using a razor is the fact that you do tend to bleed a little bit. In particular, if you shave over a pimple, that thing will gush. Aside from that occasional circumstance, I tend to see very little blood on my face unless the razor has become dull. When I start a new razor, there is little or no blood for the first two weeks or so. The following week, there are usually a few bleeding dots when I'm done, mostly at the outside edge of my face or on my neck. But I continue to use the razor for about another week and a half, until the quality of the shave itself has declined unacceptably. (Although sometimes, during that last week, I will bleed from behind my jaw like I hit a vein. But that's mostly because I'm cheap.) Shaving roughly three times a week, that means I get over a dozen uses out of each razor, or about fifty shaves from the box of four razors.
For anyone looking to try out a new razor, I recommend the Gillette Sensor 3.
