Everyone knows a “long hose” is better, right? This is not always so! First off, my hose is pretty long. I often stretch it across the yard to fill the hot tub or pool. In this instance, a long hose is great! Although stretching the hose out from the water spiket can be a heavy chore. I often think about adding another water spiket closer to the hot tub to escape having to stretch out my long hose. When I built my chicken coop, I built it next to the water spiket located out in the yard. I figured it would be very convenient to turn on the faucet and fill the chickens’ water bowls right there. However, I found it even easier to place the water bowls in the chickens’ run and squirt the hose through the chicken wire at the bowls . This way I would not have to lift up the bowls each time. However, with the 100’ water hose the hose is too long and gets in the way (even when coiled up). To solve this problem, I bought a 25’ Gilmour commercial grade hose.
I bought the hose at the end of last season as a clearance item at Lowes for $10 (normal price is about $25). I particularly liked the fact that this hose is ¾” thick. My water pipes going out to the water spikit is 1” thick, so I get a lot of water volume. Those ½” and 5/8” hoses just don’t have the same fire hose effect. This hose also has a double reinforced wall making it super tough so when my tractor rolls over it it won’t get crushed. The ends have heavy-duty brass couplings with O-rings for tight seals to keep the ends from leaking. There is also a protective metal spring collar on the faucet end to prevent kinks when pulling the hose. This hose is made in the USA too!
I also bought a two way Y coupling that allows me to split the water flow at the faucet into two. I hook my 100’ hose on one of the sides and the 25’ hose on the other side. This way, when I want to give the chickens water, I simply use the 25’ hose and all is well.
The hose is holding up very well. It still looks like new despite daily use for the past two seasons. I only use this hose for regular, potable water so I am not sure if it is suitable for chemical use. The hose is made of a combination of rubber and vinyl for elasticity and strength. Although this hose is super tough, my 100’ hose is a cheaper made hose, made of only vinyl, and it is holding up well despite being over 5 years old and also getting a lot of use.
I would recommend this hose. It looks great and holds up well. Gilmour hoses are sold in many stores including Lowes, Walmart and Ace Hardware. They also make longer hoses (in increments of 25’ feet) so I would suggest you measure your needs prior to buying a hose. Thanks for reading my review and best wishes for a nice summer!
