Pros:Safe, Comfortable, Durable, Price, Ventilation

Cons:None

The Bottom Line: This is a great value, comfortable, and protects your head while biking.

As someone who's biked from around the corner, to the entire C+O Canal, I do not take safety for granted. One minute you can be peacefully rolling along at 10mph, singing a old James Taylor song, and thinking about that granola bar you'll be enjoying at the next rest area. Boom! Out of nowhere, you hit a rivet on a trail, or be nailed from behind by some careless idiot who doesn't care about anyone's safety. It happens a lot on crowded paths in the D.C. area, where we have speed fanatics trying to dodge families, dogs, rollerbladers, and horseriders with reckless abandon. The idea of this can lead to a bit of apprehension, so I usually try to stick to "paths off the beaten track."

I've always worn a helmet since I was sixteen or so, because I could only imagine the pain caused by going unprotected. A year ago, my father's life was saved by a helmet, and I am forever thankful that he preached the importance of them. He was riding on a path in Baltimore, and there was a part of this that had broken up, due to shoddy workmanship and harsh weather. All he remembers is hitting it, and nothing else after that. He woke up in the hospital, after being transported via ambulance to the ER, and had to get several stitches on his hand. His helmet was next to him, and it was completely cracked, which is a lot better than his head if he wasn't wearing one. After a few hours he was released thanks to this, and I'm going to purchase him one of those Spaceballs versions when I can find one as a joke.

The past couple of years I've been using a Giro Indicator helmet. It's a lot more comfortable than the Bell piece of garbage that I used to have, that scrunched my big head in some strange shapes. It also has actual ventilation, so I can feel the wind blowing at my bald scalp. That's what the main selling point was for me, as if your head gets too sweaty, it can really crimp on your exercise goals. While I don't bike for a week straight now, I do like to take an occasional ten mile jaunt on the W+OD Trail in Northern VA. You can really feel the wind in there, and it allows you to reduce sweat, and focus on your fitness. The twenty holes are small enough, that you don't have to worry about them causing further injuries if you fall.

This helmet is lightweight as well, weighing in at less than a pound. If you've ever lugged around a heavy motorcycle helmet, or ancient bike helmet from the 1980's, you know what a pain this is if you lock up your bike to do some exploring on foot. If you like visors, you are in luck with this. The black visor gives you an extra level of shade, while protecting you from low hanging branches that we've all spent some time plowing through. Its quite durable, and after a few accidents, it only has a few scratches on it and didn't fall off.

I really like the durability of the helmet. Even though its light, and constructed by plastic, its taken a few crashes with only some scratch damage as well. While you are supposed to replace your helmet after a major accident, of which I've fortunately not been involved in, this one should last quite a few years for small falls. The one I had recently with this kept my head protected well, even though it was just a slight jarring bump, and I was able to continue on my trip throughout Fairfax County.

The inner molding fits perfectly around your head. The straps are very easy to adjust, as you can make them fit accordingly in a minute or so. The material used is nylon, and the plastic buckle snaps in a second. It can take a lot of abuse as well, and quickly dries if you get your bike in the Potomac River, which I did while jumping off embankments. Perhaps that's not the brightest thing for a guy not in his teens anymore to do, but it was fun, and having the helmet on made me feel a little bit safer.

A lot of bike helmets can cost you a fortune, but this was $49.99. I consider it to be a fantastic deal, as it is just as comfortable as the supposedly premium ones. I also like how the visor allows you to easily attach a mirror, which helps for those who are in traffic a lot. This was a great buy, and after my Dad's experience, I can't stress the importance of helmets enough. Sure, it might look cooler to go without one, but this one is good looking, and won't get you the stares of disdain that I used to receive in my ugly blue Bell model. You can get this model at a variety of sporting goods stores, and as I plan on going for a bike ride tomorrow, this will be protecting my head once again.
