I've always doubted the effectiveness of diet pills. Most seem to promise rapid weight loss by simply popping a few of them over time, but none have really ever been proven to work. Alli, on the other hand, is the first - and only - diet pill to receive FDA recognition, so it seemed that maybe it would differ from the hundreds of other useless diet pills flooding the marketplace. Its very high price tag (about $40 for a 60-day supply) is a bit of an eye-popper too.
Users are advised to restrict their fat intake while taking Alli. I cannot possiblly stress the importance of following this advice, because the results if you don't are among the most embarassing and awful to experience that I can think of. Alli works by passing undigested fat through the body, and as such, you can imagine what the results of that can be. Still, overindulging in a fatty meal produces something beyond your wildest, and most nauseating, dreams.
I had been taking Alli for a couple of days with no side effects whatsoever. I thought, "so far, so good." Then I ate a meal that had a higher than recommended fat content: cheese filled ravioli in a cream sauce. I didn't eat a huge amount of the ravioli, but I knew that the fat content of that meal was a good deal higher than Alli recommends that one eat. I was in no way whatsoever prepared for the results.
The next morning, I was sitting at my kitchen table, drinking a cup of coffee and pouring over the morning newspaper. I wasn't experiencing any gastic upset at all, nor any "internal grumblings." Then, I got up to go get a second cup of coffee and glanced at the formerly cream-colored cloth upholstery of the chair I had been sitting on. To my horror, the seat had a very large orange stain! I was wearing a pair of shorts at the time, and found that the seat of those once comfortable shorts was all but totally soaked in this orange goo. I was eventually able to get the stain out of the upholstery, and to get my shorts cleaned, but my "tighty-whiteys" went straight into the trash. Worst of all, I had absolutely no idea any of this was happening.
This "leakage" continued for almost two days! Fortunately, I didn't have to go anywhere outside my home. I can't possibly imagine the embarassment of someone noticing orange goo leaking down my pant legs, nor anyone else suffering the same embarassment in public. Of course, one could simply say that I didn't follow directions, and that would be the truth. Still, the side effects were so awful, that I just took the remainder of the pills and threw them in the garbage.
Simply reducing one's fat intake, as recommended by Alli, will in and of itself help one to reduce weight. Alli seems to be a pill designed to force one to do that, or suffer the consequences. That, to me, is a bit extreme. So, at least in my book, Alli gets a very, very big "thumbs down." BEWARE!
