When my daughter was a toddler learning to feed herself we tried to find products that would make dinner time fun for her. She was a picky eater and needed that little extra when it came to mealtime. I saw the Gerber Glitter-Filled Fork and Spoon Set at a local department store and decided they looked like something my daughter would find fun and enticing.
The fork and spoon sets are made entirely of break-resistant plastic and come in a variety of bright colors. I purchased a bright red set as well as the bright blue set for my daughter to use. My daughter did not like cooked carrots cut up (in tiny pieces) or mashed up as a toddler and still liked eating her jarred variety and with the colors of the utensils I chose I did not have to worry about any discoloration showing.
A feature of the Gerber Glitter-Filled Fork and Spoon Set that I found comforting is that Gerber made these utensils as safe as they could for a toddler to use. The spoon edges are smooth and rounded. The fork tines have blunt ends to insure your toddler doesn't hurt themselves. These utensils are the perfect size for a toddler to handle alone or with assistance but please remember that parental supervision is still required when a child is using these utensils or any other brand.
The handles of these utensils are cylinder shaped, they are easy for a toddler to grasp and handle. Gerber also offers a similar glitter-filled utensil set in their Graduate product line, the main difference between the sets is the shape of the handle. The Graduate utensil set has a flattened handle versus the cylinder shape that this set offers.
The plastic cylinder is filled with non-toxic mineral oil. Suspended in the mineral oil are star shapes in a variety of colors and a brilliant display of sparkles that match the color of the utensil. With each movement of the fork or spoon your child is visually treated to the movement and dazzle of the sparkles and star shapes floating effortlessly from one end of the utensil to the other.
Cleaning of the utensils is quite easy with a mild detergent and some water. These utensils are not dishwasher safe, they will melt and you will have quite a mess to clean up if you place them in there. A friend of mine did not follow the manufacturer's warning about them not being dishwasher safe and had a glitter/oil mess inside of her machine.
For my daughter these were nice little sets of utensils that made mealtime a little more interesting for her. Although they are by no means a necessity for a child's nutrition, they provided my daughter with that little extra enticement that she needed. Any product that got my daughter to eat one more bite of food was always tops in my book.
