Eve and Roarke's Relationship Faces Challenges in Glory in Death

The Bottom Line: Glory in Death was an Entertaining addition to the In Death series by J.D. Robb. People that enjoyed Naked in Death should pick this one up.

In 1995, a series of romantic suspense books set in the future began. Eleven years later, the In Death series is still going strong. It was probably five or six years ago when I picked up Naked in Death, the first book in the series. I was quickly hooked on the books and have now read them all. I get the new books in the series as soon as they are released. I decided that I wanted to read the books again even though I still have all kinds of other books around waiting to be read.
The books in the In Death series are set in the future so the characters get to use all sorts of interesting futuristic gadgets. Glory in Death was set in 2058. There are now twenty-three books in the series with the twenty fourth due to be published late in 2006. Each book has had its own plot while still being connected to the other books. The books do build on each other and events from previous books are mentioned. The books would make more sense if they were read in order. That is what I did. The books deal with the different murder investigations Eve Dallas, a lieutenant on the New York police force, is assigned. Some time is also given to her private life, including her relationship with Roarke, a billionaire with a questionable past.
Eve and Roarke were still involved, even sharing custody of Galahad, the large cat that Eve had sort of adopted from a crime scene. Eve still had her apartment even though she was spending more and more time at Roarke’s house. She got another high profile murder case to work on and wasn’t happy that Roarke was connected to the victims. Eve decided to work with reporter Nadine Furst in a plan to try to draw the killer out. Another reporter, C.J. was around a lot and seemed to be trying to stir up trouble for Eve and Roarke. Eve had to deal with complications in her relationship with Roarke while trying to catch the killer before anyone else was murdered.
Glory in Death picked up shortly after the end of Naked in Death with the first of several murders that ended up being connected. A few events from the first book were briefly mentioned. I don’t think people would have trouble following what was going on in Glory in Death if they hadn’t read Naked in Death first. I do think certain things would make more sense if the books were read in order. The book didn’t have any kind of recap of what had happened in the first book, so anyone that likes for something like that to be included may be disappointed. I don’t think the book needed it.
Glory in Death focused on another high profile murder case that Eve was working on. The first victim was discovered within the first few pages of the book. She had been a successful woman that was well known, a trait that the other victims also shared. The first victim had been a prosecutor, so finding her killer was a high priority for the police. Eve discovered that Roarke had connections to both women, which complicated things for the investigation. As the book continued, the media got very involved since C.J. seemed to always be around, wanting to get his big story that would make him famous. He really didn’t care about the victims or if what he reported was completely accurate or not. The bodies of the victims were described after they were found. The descriptions did get a bit graphic and could be upsetting to some readers. I didn’t feel like the book was that violent overall even though there was some violence in several scenes. Overall I didn’t think the book was predictable and it did keep my guessing. One small aspect of the book was predictable since I knew that there were still more books to come in the series. That didn’t bother me at all because there were enough surprises included in the book.
Eve and Roarke’s growing relationship also received a lot of attention in Glory in Death. The relationship didn’t detract from the mystery. Eve and Roarke both had troubled pasts and neither had been in a really serious, long term relationship before. They weren’t exactly sure how to handle some situations. Eve seemed downright frightened of the idea of being in a committed relationship. Roarke was more open with his growing feelings and adapted a little better to the new relationship than Eve did. He was interested in a commitment and got frustrated with how hesitant Eve was. She was afraid of being in a relationship and seemed to be just waiting for everything to fall apart. She had no idea how to be in a relationship and really over reacted when Roarke gave her a present when he returned from a business trip. She was really struggling and had trouble believing that Roarke really loved her like he said he did. There were some sex scenes at different points in the book between them. The scenes did get descriptive, though I didn’t think they were too graphic. People that don’t like to read those types of scenes may want to pick a different book.
Eve and Roarke were the main characters in Glory in Death. Eve was in more of the book than Roarke was and ended up being more developed. She was still dedicated to her job, though she was starting to take some time for her relationship with Roarke. She was still having trouble dealing with being in a relationship and she did overreact to one or two things. Roarke wasn’t sure where their relationship was going, but he decided to do a few things based on the hope that the relationship would last. Summerset continued to dislike Eve, though he was enchanted by Mavis when she visited Eve at Roarke’s. Feeney was back, working on the investigation as well handling the electronic aspects of the case. Nadine’s part was slightly larger than it had been in the first book since she played a pivotal part in Eve’s plan to catch the killer. Peabody, a bet cop who would become a returning character later in the series, was briefly introduced. I had forgotten that she turned up this early in the series.
J.D. Robb is the name that Nora Roberts uses for the In Death series. Since the authors are actually the same person, people that the like the books written by one may also like the ones written by the other. I’ve read all the books in the In Death series as well as many of the books she’s written as Nora Roberts and I’ve enjoyed them all. The In Death books tend to have stronger mysteries and they are set in the future. Both groups of books are well written, descriptive, and feature well developed characters. One of her books, Remember When, is listed as being written by both authors. The book started in current time and then jumped forward to Eve’s time for the conclusion. Remember When took place between Imitation in Death and Divided in Death.
Glory in Death was an entertaining second book in the In Death series. People that enjoyed Naked in Death should definitely pick this one up.
