Glutino Chocolate Breakfast Bars - They made chocolate taste nasty!

Written: Dec 06 '07
Pros:Readily available, individually packaged, Price is "Ok"
Cons:They taste horribly bitter and look like poop
The Bottom Line: They taste as bad as they look

Being on a gluten and casein free diet means that I need to send in a boxed lunch every day for my son to eat at school. While my son is the type of kid who could happily eat the same lunch day after day, I prefer to give him a variety of things to keep things a bit more exciting. When I saw these chocolate breakfast bars they seemed like a great idea for a "sweet" but nutritious treat for him. Plus, I figured that he could also have one for breakfast or any other time of that day for that matter.

Trying out the Glutino Chocolate Breakfast Bars
The front of the package shows a tasty looking Chocolate Breakfast bar that was very appealing. Even my picky 6 year old agreed that he would try it based on the picture on the front and the fact that it was chocolate. Each bar is wrapped individually in a foil wrapper which is both convenient and helps to keep the bars fresh. If you are buying these based off of the picture and hoping for a tasty chocolate treat... you will be sorely disappointed.

Out of the wrapper however, the actual bar looks almost nothing like the bar pictured on the outside of the package. Instead, it looks mostly like something I'd expect to see in the bathroom if my kids forgot to flush. Yeah, it is that bad looking. So, if you can get over that it looks like a poop and still want to taste it you are very brave. Save yourself a mistake I made and do not sniff it. Sadly, this smells just as bad as it looks. Yes, it smells like chocolate but more like bittersweet baking chocolate and moreso I these bars smell like prunes! When I read that there was raisins in these on the ingredient list I was thinking it would be "ok" because I love chocolate covered raisins. But, that was definitely a wrong assumption to make. The consistency of these bars is very chewy yet crumbly at at the same time. You wouldn't want to eat them without having a beverage of some type as I found them very hard to swallow. As far as how they tasted - well, this doesn't taste like any chocolate that I have ever eaten. The taste is a combination of bittersweet chocolate and a paste that is made of raisins.

I didn't care for the taste of these at all, but the true test would be what my 6 year old son thought of them. He took a few bites of one and then left it. I've tried to send one in to school and its never even come back opened. When offered one, he declines it immediately. This from a child who saw the picture on the box initially and wanted to try it. So, he obviously agrees with me these are not good.

Glutino should not call these Chocolate breakfast bars - they overwhelmingly taste of raisins and sawdust.
