| Freak369's Full Review: Gobstopper Everlasting 7oz |
Growing up we always had some type of gobstopper; be it the Flaming Red Ringo or the Purple Passion Gigantic Grape, if you had a few coins in your pocket you could walk out of the sweet shop with a huge, glorious bag of them. A gobstopper is nothing more than a smaller form of a Jawbreaker. Why is "gobstopper" not capitalized but "Jawbreaker" is? One is a generic term [gobstopper] and one is trademarked. I would imagine that more than a few kids broke or chipped teeth on gobstoppers and they aren't exactly the safest things around as you could easily swallow and choke on one of them. Even so, gobstoppers are part of my past and whenever I see them, I have to smile and remember how we would sit on the park bench and see who would go the longest without cracking one open. Willy Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper What separates a gobstopper from an Everlasting Gobstopper? Gobstoppers are, as I mentioned, a rather generic name for a round hard candy with tons of flavor layers. While some of them are one single flavor, most have five to twenty different layers. How are they made? Well, the Oompa Loompa's guard the official Willy Wonka secret with their lives but a basic gobstopper is made by creating a center from a tart powdered mix that's pressed into a small ball. After that the balls are added to a churn barrel and the flavors are added one at a time while the barrel is turning. When the last layer is applied a thick coating is added to keep the gobstoppers from sticking to each other. An Everlasting Gobstopper, I would imagine, is made the same way but with more extreme flavors and color combinations. What's the appeal of an Everlasting Gobstopper? It’s a candy that, if eaten as intended, will last an incredibly long time. In fact, you don't eat them, you suck on them. To get the best flavor experience from an Everlasting Gobstopper you really need to move it around in your mouth and resist the urge to bite into it or crack it open. If you've eaten one correctly your mouth should look like its in the third stage of decay because all of the colors end up melting into one. Of course that is only with an Everlasting Gobstopper, regular single flavored gobstoppers won't give you that same effect. The Everlasting Gobstoppers are smaller in size than the traditional ones. Most of them are between the size of an American nickel or dime; their size was reduced to reduce the chance of choking but these are still not a candy item for younger children. Atomic Fireballs are a popular for of gobstopper but they aren't a Wonka branded candy. Wonka has never made a spicy hot comparable product to the Atomic Fireball and chances are there never will be one. Why? Atomic Fireballs are a specialty product, not everyone is going to want to suck on something that leaves their mouth feeling like its been scorched. The flavors of the Everlasting Gobstoppers include orange, cherry, grape and lemon but you won't really taste one single flavor when you are eating it. Since the flavors are in layers, they don't dissolve evenly so you end up with some pretty interesting flavor combinations whether you want them or not. Everlasting Gobstoppers are sold in a variety of sizes. The most popular is the seven and eleven ounce cardboard boxes [often called movie theater packs]. You can get these for about a dollar at most stores. When we bought these as kids they were sold by weight, not by the piece. You would stand at the counter, tell Mr. Jenners how much money you had and he'd start filling the bag for you. Now things are a bit simpler, you can get them by the bag, box or in bulk. The bulk ones come individually wrapper or loose; the loose ones are usually for people who want to put them in gumball dispenser type machines but I guess they would be called gobstopper machines in that case. The Bottom Line Everlasting Gobstoppers are a nice treat if you can resist cracking them open. If you like these you may want to check out the Everlasting Gobstopper Eggs or the Chewy Everlasting Gobstoppers. Both are official Willy Wonka candies [owned by Nestle] and are a true treat to eat. If you've never had an Everlasting Gobstopper you really don't know what you are missing; if you have the patience to suck on something for about a half hour, you will be rewarded with a tart surprise in the middle. Even if you can't complete an Everlasting Gobstopper and have to bite into it, it's still one of the coolest forms of gobstopper out there! As always, thanks for the visit… ~^V^~ Freak ~^V^~ © 2007 Freak369
