jiastar's Full Review: A. J. Drew and Patricia Telesco - God / Goddess: E...
I have read books on E.S.P. and ghosts since grammar school. I got my first tarot deck as a freshman in high school and I started reading books on spells by my junior year. But, it was not until the age of 18 that I came to Wicca, which for the record was 20 years ago.
I am always on the lookout for new books on Wicca that are in some way unique and not simply rehashing of material that can be already found on my own bookshelf. I was drawn to God/Goddess from the moment I glanced through the prefaces which explore the history of Divinity itself, the progression from animism to the belief in Gods and Goddesses.
Before I continue it might be best to pause and explain that among the majority of practitioners of the Wiccan faith there is the belief in a Divine that is both male and female. This Divine is called upon as God and Goddess, Lord and Lady, and by using names culled from various cultures and points in history.
The goal of this book is to allow the reader to find new ways to connect with and relate to the Divine and by so doing awaken the Divine spark within themselves. The book accomplishes this by sharing:
- Deities of various cultures
- myths and legends
- prayers
- rituals
- journal exercises
- more
While many books are available which are little more than shopping lists of gods and goddesses, God/Goddess strives to be much much more. A.J. Drew and Patricia Telesco have created a book which truly calls the reader to explore and develop their own personal relationship with the Divine.
Additionally, this book challenges the reader to make their spirituality a part of daily life and not just something that comes into play during times of ritual and magic.
Highlights
- spend an hour a month in total silence
- honor the Goddess on Mother's Day
- combine spiritual cleansing with your weekly/daily chores
- finding the sacred in even the lowliest job
God/Goddess is a relatively slim volume at only a little more than 200 pages in length. However these pages pack quite a whollop in terms of how much information can be found within them. This is not a book to breeze through, it is a book to read slowly and carefully, preferably with a blank book nearby to jot down notes and your own thoughts.
Additionally at the end of the book there are appendices which list Deities from various cultures and their magical/ritual correspondences. Unfortunately, what it is lacks (and sorely needs) is an index.
Aside from that one nitpicking negative I truly feel that this book belongs on the bookshelf of any Wiccan who wants to take their relationship with the Divine to a deeper level, who wants to explore the place of the Gods in their day-to-day lives, who wants to deepen the level of Spirituality that they bring to the mundane areas of their life.
Recognizing that each person has a unique vision of the divine, God/Goddess explores central archetypes, complete with historical, multicultural examp...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
