Pros:excellent chocolate and combinations, good selection
Cons:expensive, i don't like coconut
The Bottom Line: The best chocolate on Earth. There better be an unlimited supply when I get to heaven.
Theres one thing that I can be bribed with. For all my talk of preferring fruity candies over chocolate, there is one type of chocolate that will change my mind every time and that is from Godiva. I had one friend for years who had me on his list of presents during the holidays for five pounds of their Cherry Cordials. Yeah, there are probably still fat cells on my hips from those days.

However, I do on a regular basis get a nice one-pound box of assorted Godiva chocolates. The selection in this box really gives a great taste for what is great about these chocolates. This is definitely not Hersheys, something I notice from the moment I open the box. The smell wafting out is not quite as sweet as that of most commercial chocolates. Instead, it is a rich, chocolatey aroma that is stronger than most other candies.
The taste is something to be experienced as well. The hardened chocolate is smoother than other chocolates Ive tasted. Its not overly sweet or sugary, but smooth and creamy with what seems like just the perfect amount of sugar added to augment the chocolate taste rather than dominate it.
By far, my favorite chocolate in the box is still the Cherry Cordial. Wrapped in red aluminum, its a dark chocolate shell surrounding a whole cherry in a sweet liquid. It is positively heaven to me.
A close second are the variety of caramel candies in the box. Godiva does caramel about as well as it does chocolate. The caramel flavor is dominant, not the sweetness or sugary taste. The caramel itself is smooth and delicious. In the more liquid forms it doesnt quite run out, but is like a thick syrup without being terribly sticky. The Milk Chocolate Lion of Belgium contains the caramel inside a milk chocolate shell with a lions head on the outside. This is not a candy to be popped in the mouth and eaten as quickly as possible. Instead, I savor it slowly in several bites.
Both the Milk Caramel Embrace and Dark Caramel Embrace contain chewy caramel in the center of either milk or dark chocolate. The caramel is not so chewy that it is sticky to my teeth or difficult to chew.
In general, I am not crazy about nuts. However, the nuts in many of the Godiva candies are ground up so fine its not like biting into pieces of nut. Rather, the flavor is in the candy without the large pieces of nut. In particular the Pecan Caramel Duet nicely combines the flavor of pecan and caramel in milk chocolate with caramel highlights on top. This candy also comes with raspberry and chocolate in addition to the pecan flavors.
There are a variety of truffles in the box as well. Godiva truffles are quite good., whether its the Milk Chocolate Truffle, Cappuccino Truffle, or Dark Chocolate Truffle. Although present on the guide, I have never come across the Key Lime Truffle or Double Chocolate Raspberry Truffle in all my years of eating these. I think some are put on the guide as an enticement to sell more Godiva chocolates. After eating whats in the box, you will find yourself wanting to seek those out!
There are several varieties of solid chocolate in the box which will allow you to savor just how good the actual chocolate Godiva makes really is. One of my favorite is the white chocolate, since this is the best white chocolate I have ever tasted. The mint chocolates have a nice taste as well, whether blended right into the chocolate or with white, liquidy mint centers.
One of the most unique pieces in the box is the Open Oyster. Its a fabulous looking candy with two milk chocolate oyster shells surrounding a pearl that is a hazelnut praline. There are other pralines in the box, and I like the ones from Godiva where I dont normally eat pralines. It probably has a lot to do with how small the pieces of hazelnut are.
Another popular selection is the variety of ganache in the box. These are a variety of soft centers surrounded by chocolate shells. All are excellent and theres not one that I didnt care for. The only piece in the entire box I ever give away is the Coconut Pyramid and that is just because I dont care for coconut. Anyone I give it to does enjoy the candy thoroughly, its just not my cup of tea.
Godiva chocolates do not come cheap - that is the one major downfall. However, that does help to keep it for special occasions. You can give this to anyone on any special occasion and they will appreciate it. I know I do!
