I really enjoyed reading Gods and Generals, even as much as I enjoyed The Killer Angels. When I read Michael Shaara's book, I could not put it down, and I really wanted more of it, which is why Gods and Generals is so great.

Jeff may not be his father, but I think he is very close. Gods and Generals gives us an inside view of what the war must have been like to the men who fought in it. It provides us with more than numbers and statistics, and it makes the reader realize that this actually happened to real people in our very country. Shaara does not claim that his book is fact, it is Civil War fiction. This fiction, however, makes truth seem more like reality.
I recommend that you read Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels, The Last Full Measure, and then read Gone for Soldiers. I think that you need to read the novels of the Civil War first to really appreciate the Mexican War. Shaara is an excellent writer, and I look forward to reading any books he wants to send our way.
