Pros:it'll keep your bookshelf from floating away
No character station
why not pick up a history book?
The Bottom Line: Atrocious simply atrocious!
this book a prequel to his father's the killer Angels, describes the conflict from the beginning of the Civil War to the beginning of the battle of Gettysburg. note the fact that the battle of Gettysburg is considered by most to be a sideshow to the real winning of the war in the capture of Vicksburg but I digress.

Most of the reviewers here have already commented on the mediocre characterization and lousy writing so I'll comment on something different.
How is this book for history? Well the author knows his classic narrative of the Civil War. At least through the historians of the south. What exactly was Grant doing all this time? Theres not much here that's particularly innovative or new. As a work of fiction it fails giving there is nothing particularly new about the conflict itself or the reality of combat. The characters such as they are our general's and politicians something more interesting could've been done with the soldiers but this would have indirectly contradicted his father's general's perspective in the killer Angels.
I listened to the audio abridgment of this book and I'm happy to say I didn't waste time with an unabridged version. Considering how bad the abridgment was I wonder just what was cut out.
How did it make me feel? Well board. Most of my creative writing teachers say that you can learn something from reading anything this book provides a list of things not to do.
