LILvoyce's Full Review: Gohyah Tea (Bitter Melon Tea) In Bulk 2.85 Oz/80 G
I have accidentally purchased this tea more than once. The reason being is that I go to many different oriental markets and I can't read their writing written on the packaging. Most of it is imported and I only know English.
Description
Gohya Tea is tea made from a Bitter Melon. You can find this tea loose, in tea bags, and one time I found it in crystals. I thought I was buying tea bags, and opened it to reaveal this crystals which are ment to have boiled water poured on them for an instant type of tea.
*Note* There is not specific brand mentioned here, so I am just going to be discussing Gohya Tea in general. Feel free to correct me if you see a specific brand. To me the ones I have tried all tasted like "yack" anyway.
One package of Gohya Tea contains approximately 11.8 protiens, and 12.5 mg of Vitamin C. So this means that it is very healthy for me. I am a gastric bypass patient and am needing to get in more protiens.
My Experiences
I do have several boxes of Gohyah Tea in my cupboard. One of the boxes has this imprinted on it: Tra Kho Qua. I have not a clue what that says. I only know its a Bitter Melon tea from the picture on the box. Bitter melon sort of looks like a shriveled up cucumber before it is dried.
I tried brewing this stuff, it smells unlike any tea I have ever tried. It taste terrible, and worse when you put sugar in it. Milk? Forget it. It taste like it shouldn't even be a tea. It is bitter just a bit, and nutty, and I really can't explain this odd taste. It doesn't taste like tea though. That is for sure. It is sort of yellowish when it is brewed.
I am thrifty, and I was bound and determined to make use of all of this tea I accidentally bought. What do I do with it? Well.. First off, I will say that I am not a chef, but a decent cook over all. I am not afraid to experiment in the kitchen.
We were out one time at a Thai restaurant and I had the most wonderful dish. It was a Thai green tea fried rice. I am not sure how they made it, but it had bacon, eggs, veggies, fried rice and green tea in it. I got to thinking, hey why not try to make fried rice with this Gohyah yack? (OOPS.. I mean tea.)
That is exactly what I did! Wow! Did it ever taste great, and my family raved about my rice. What I did, was I made my rice in the microwave instead of using water I used brewed Gohyah Tea in its place. I then let my rice cool in the fridge over night. I made my fried rice like I normally would stir frying some onions, oil, and red or green curry paste, then followed by some stir fried veggies, added my cooked bacon and eggs, and wouldn't you know it, this gohya tea really made this rice dish a hit.
I probably won't go out of my way to purchase this tea again, and am sure I will accidentally purchase it again sometime in the near future.
Overall?
This is the worst tea I have ever tasted in my life. It is bitter and nutty, and weird tasting. Candy Reviews:
