Pros: Five ounce bags, strange flavors, cute jingle, inexpensive.
Cons: A little gummier than other Bears, too many lemon pieces per bag.
I'd seen the cute commercials for Haribo Gummy Bears over and over; I finally caved in and bought a few bags when they surfaced on the multitude of Halloween candy displays. How bad could they be? They're a gummy bear after all so even if they are bad, they are still going to be good. They are a little harder than the Black Forest gummies but they have a lot more flavor to them so it is a trade off. I am sure if you warmed these up a little they would be a tad softer so if you like a little less 'chew' to your gummy candy there is hope for them. They have the same basic shape as almost all of the other regular sized gummy bears so you aren’t getting something cuter or with a more defined bear shape. I opened one bag and started chomping away on them and quickly realized that I don’t like the lemon flavored ones. No, not at all. I have no idea what flavor the almost clear bears are supposed to be but I don't like those either. I am eating some as I am typing this and I'm really finding it hard to come up with some positive points to these.
The texture is a lot thicker than other gummies I have had; this means that you have to chew them longer before you swallow them. I checked the bag to see if maybe I got one that was old or close to expiring but on the back bottom of the bag it says "best by 03/2011". Maybe I am spoiled with the Black Forest gummies or I like softer versions. The other flavors in the bag include orange, cherry and whatever flavor the green bears are supposed to be. When I ate the colors individually only the orange and lemon really stuck out as having an identifiable flavor to them. Maybe my taste buds are tired or I lack the ability to taste whatever flavor they are supposed to be. According to the Haribo website there are supposed to be flavors for each of the colors [green = strawberry, yellow = lemon, red = raspberry, gold = pineapple, orange = orange]. Why would you use green for strawberry? That just makes no sense.
One of the redeeming things about these is that they contain gelatin so it is yet another item that my vegan friends can't eat. Oh, I have seen them eating them in the past so the next time I see them I will most definitely bring that up to them. One thing that might really strike you as odd is that these are made in Turkey. Sure, that means they are imported but it also means that you have no idea what kind of health standards or quality control they have in place. Now that I have a flavor code to go with the colors I feel a little better about them but I am still having trouble with getting a pineapple taste from the almost clear ones. I will say this, they are not clumpy or sticky so when you grab some from the bag they are not all squished together.
I'm still able to get the five ounce bags where I live; most companies have instituted product downsizing but kept the price the same. The five ounce bag contains about three and a half servings of seventeen bears. From that you get 140 calories, 31 grams of carbohydrates and amazingly enough, 3 grams of protein. These are fat free so if you have to use that as an excuse to snack on them, go for it. Would I buy these again? For me, no. For other people that like them, yes. These are not something that I would give younger kids as a snack or treat because of the chance of choking on them if they don't chew them completely and trust me, you really do need to chew these to bits before you swallow them. There's no "fruit juice" flavors listed in the ingredients – you just get the basic and generic "artificial and natural flavors".
I did see some mini packs of these at the store; even though it cost more I should have bought that instead of the one ounce bag so I could hand them out as treats or take them to the shop. I am sure the bags that I bought will get eaten by someone but it won’t be me unless I am starving or having a late night craving for something gummy. Given the amount of chew power you need to have to get through these I would have to give these low scores on appeasing zombies. If you find yourself in a crisis situation and this is all you have to defend yourself you would be better off throwing the bag at them than to offer them a handful as a diversion. Sorry Haribo, these didn't do it for me. I will check out the other awesome looking products that they have but the basic Gold Bag bears didn’t do anything for my taste buds.
