If youre looking for good Chinese take-out and youre in the Town of Medway or nearby, you might consider stopping and ordering at the fairly new Golden Bamboo Chinese Restaurant in the Medway Commons Plaza.
Offering a wide variety of Cantonese, Polynesian and Thai dishes, Golden Bamboo also has decent prices and various meal options that should satisfy anyone looking for Chinese food. Not only that, but the food is quite good and the portion size is better than some other nearby Chinese take-out restaurants.
Where is the Golden Bamboo?
Medway is located in whats called Metrowest, Massachusetts. Its the suburbs that are just west (and also in some places a bit south) of Boston. The restaurant is located right on Route 109, which is the main road that runs between Interstate 495 and Interstate 95 (with the town of Milford on the 495 end and Westwood on the 95 end). Medway is about a 1/3 of the way between the two highways so Golden Bamboo is closer to 495 than it is to 95.
The restaurant is located within the new Medway Commons Plaza, which is located near the intersection of Route 109 and Holliston Street in Medway, which makes it close for both some Franklin and Holliston residents. Millis is just to the east on Route 109.
What do you find at the Golden Bamboo?
The Golden Bamboo is simply a take-out restaurant. While there are a few tables, the vast majority of the business there is take-out and if you were to stay and eat there is no dining ambiance or real dining service to speak of.
Instead, the Golden Bamboo focuses on take-out with an expansive menu of Cantonese, Polynesian and some Thai dishes. In addition to the various dishes available, the restaurant 22 different 'combination specials' that cover almost everything that various people will like.
The Menu
Like I said, there is plenty to choose from at the Golden Bamboo. The menu is broken down into the sections you'd expect to find in almost every Chinese take-out restaurant. The sections include:
Appetizers
Lo Mein
Chow Mein
Chicken
Rice
Soups
Seafood
Beef
Pork
Vegetables
Chef Specialties
Healthy Dietary Dishes
The selections within each of these categories is like what you would find at most Chinese take-out restaurants, with items like beef with broccoli, boneless spare ribs, sesame chicken, wonton soup and such.
The individual dishes are available in a single size, except for the chow mein, lo mein and rice selections, which are available in a small and large size. With the single-sized selections, the average dish is more than enough for one person and probably enough for two people with an average appetite. With the larger sized items, you could feed at least two and probably 3 to 4 people.
The prices for the dishes average around $9, with the vegetable dishes being less expensive and the seafood dishes being slightly more expensive. The appetizers run from about $3 to $7 and the soups are about $1.75 each.
In addition to the various selections in the main menu, there are two additional sections, a Thai Corner and the combination specials. The Thai corner includes several different selections that run in price from about $7 to $10.
The combination specials cover just about everything that Golden Bamboo offers are make a great option if you are looking to get a little of this and a little of that without having to get the full dishes of each item. Each of the combination specials come with a choice of two items, along with pork fried rice or white rice. There's also an appetizer special that let you use choose three different appetizers and create your own combination plate.
The combination specials are priced differently for lunch and dinner with the lunch specials running from around $5 to about $7, while at dinnertime, the specials are the same, but there's an additional $1.50 added to each special.
Well, how's it taste?
I consider myself quite picky when it comes to Chinese food and I've come to enjoy Golden Bamboo with only a few reservations.
Overall the quality of what you take home is fresh, well presented, evenly cooked and most importantly, tastes good. I've had dinner there several times along with my boyfriend and some friends, so we have had a chance to try out a lot of the menu and with all of the meals we've had, we've yet to come across something that wasn't well made or of good quality.
My only real food quality complaint comes with the chicken fingers (which I shouldn't be eating anyway), but they tend to be fairly greasy. I'm not sure if it's the oil they use or if they let them cook a little too long in the hot oil, but the breading tends to be too greasy for my taste. I usually end up peeling the breading off the fingers before I eat it. My other problem is that I don't like the bulk duck sauce that they provide with dishes. But that's a pretty minor problem I just use the packets in place of the little cup of duck sauce.
I usually get myself one of the combination meals, with my favorite being the the one with chicken and broccoli with chicken fingers and pork friend rice. I usually add in a cup of wonton soup
Delivery?
Free delivery is available with a $1.50 delivery charge. They deliver to Medway, Millis, Franklin, Holliston, Bellingham and Norfolk. I've just always gone and picked up my meal, so I can't speak to their delivery.
Would I eat there again?
Yup, I've eaten there several times and I'll continue to go back when the hankering for Chinese take-out hits me. Even though there are several different choices for Chinese take-out in the immediate area, I've found that Golden Bamboo rises to the top of choices lately.
Final thoughts
If all you are looking for in a Chinese restaurant is good take-out food, you shouldn't be disappointed with Golden Bamboo. It offers an extensive selection with good quality food and inexpensive prices.
