| criteeker's Full Review: Golden Blueberry Blintzes |
Call them Blintzes or Crepes, I call them yummy! Served as a meal, side dish, appetizer or desert, Golden makes different blintz flavors including cheese, cherry, apple, potato (like a knish) and spinach-broccoli. Not sure about that last one, but the blueberry is my fave! Six come to a box and markets (where I live) sell them between $5-$6 - best to wait until they're on sale. When they hit $2.99 we stock up our outside freezer.
While the box suggests one cooking option in the conventional or toaster oven, I prefer to cook them in a margarine-lined skillet on medium flame for five minutes per side and two minutes per edge. DO NOT ever consider cooking them in a microwave, unless you like a huge sticky mess that's not very tasty.
When all four sides are "Golden" brown, you're only decision then becomes what topping. I usually top mine with sour cream and cinnamon-Splenda. You can use cinnamon-sugar if desired. Optional toppings include your favorite jam or jelly, whipped cream, cottage cheese, fruit or ice cream. I've had warm blintzes with vanilla ice cream as a topping and I'm here to tell you - it's darn near as a good as hot apple pie ala mode.
Amount per serving Nutritional Facts:
Here's the joke, they suggest a serving is ONE 61g blintz. I usually eat either three as a desert or all six as a meal.
Calories - 90 Total Fat - 1g Cholesterol - 10g Sodium - 150mg Carbs - 18g Sugars - 6g Protein 2g
Ingredients:
Crepe: water, enriched wheat flour, corn starch, egg whites, canola oil, dextrose, unbleached lecithen and salt.
Filling: Blueberries, water, sugar, modified corn starch, lemon juice and salt.
Final Words:
The box touts low fat, low cholesterol, zero trans fat and no preservatives, but obviously the blintzes are high in things like sodium and calories if and when you eat more than one at a time. And, trust me, eating one of these tasty treats at a time is going to be quite difficult because your taste buds will convince your brain that you want more. Golden has been making blintzes for over fifty years, so they know how to make a 'great crepe'. Say that ten times fast.
Oh, and one last piece of advice; make sure to wash the plate after eating. The blueberry can become tough to wash and may even stain some dishware.
