My first experience with this intoxicating brew came at the tender age of sixteen. In the mid-90's this drink was quite popular with the high school crowd and I'd venture a guess that it still is.
The only way to drink Goldschlager is straight up. Drink it as a shot, or over ice in a rocks glass. There really isn't anything that the flavor of Goldschlager would compliment. Why do I say that?
Goldschlager is a cinnamon flavored liquor, peppered with tiny 24 K gold flakes. If you remember Fireballs and cinnamon hearts, you will be overcome with nostalgia as you drink this. This is probably why it's popular with the younger crowd.
The gold flakes are a cool marketing gimmick. No, I'm not advocating selling liquor to minors. I am not sure if that was ever their intention or not. It looks like really elegant water. They can also charge you more for a liquor with gold flakes, even though there are so few it really shouldn't make a bottle cost more than $.50 more.
The gold flakes are few and far between. You have to shake the bottle just before pouring in order to even have any in your glass. You don't taste them as you drink it, and it passes through your system. It's like any other trace element.
The thing you should be warned about is the toxicity of this drink. It's very misleading. It looks like vodka, so your first instinct will tell you this stuff is strong. After you down a shot or two, and experience the lack of a nasty alcohol after-taste, you might think it's not too potent.
The right thing to do is trust your first instinct. This stuff is strong! It's 87 proof strong (43.5% alcohol by volume). A lot of first time drinkers don't realize this, and can get very sick off of this candy flavored treat.
It's a rather expensive drink, but the sweet candy-like taste can make it worth it. Just remember not to get carried away. This is something you certainly want to enjoy in moderation!
