Let's be honest, work can get boring at times. Sure, you don't like to admit it, but you'll spend your slow time searching the internet for the latest Lindsay Lohan news or information on which third receiver you should pick up for your fantasy team when those dreaded bye weeks have decimated your squad. You might even waste time talking around the water cooler, assuming your office even has one. Everyone has a unique way to get through the dreary times. Myself, I look to the various toys and puzzles on my desk. One, which proves to be a formidable challenge, is my Golf Ball Water Globe.
The premise of the Golf Ball Water Globe is relatively simple. Your goal is to get the golf ball on the tee which is inside a water filled globe. But, it's a little more difficult than you would think. With the magnification of the ball due to the water and the unpredictability of the motion of the ball, also due to the water, it can be rather difficult to secure the ball onto the tee. Another obstacle can be yourself. As you attempt to get the ball on the tee, most people have a tendency to quickly jerk or twist the globe. Unfortunately, that's exactly the opposite technique you'll want to take.
I can recommend a relatively solid technique to try to get the ball to stay on the tee. It works for myself and another colleague in my office. Others, however, try their own style with absolutely no avail. The key is to have some sort of base to rest the globe on during your attempt. I prefer to be sitting at my desk and with just a quick flip I pop the ball onto the tee. You'll need that base (desk/shelf/counter, etc) to immediately place the globe down. By doing this, you let the ball slow down significantly and allows it to rest on the tee. Sure, it may take you a few attempts, but I've found this technique to be highly effective. If you don't use a base you'll never be steady enough to allow for the ball to rest on the tee.
So, now you know how the Golf Ball Water Globe works and how to (easily?) solve its perplexing dilemma. But, you may ask how it looks or if it is worth purchasing. And, actually it's a very solidly made product. The water globe sets securely in a black rubber base that doesn't scratch or scuff, so it's safe for even the most delicate of desks or dressers. The globe itself contains a pretty red tee that sits in grass like turf...just like a real golf tee would. But, there is a small sand turf patch as well. Certainly, it's meant to represent a bunker, but why that would be next to the tee box is a mystery to me. Still, it's high quality and looks good. The globe itself seems rather solid. It could probably withstand being dropped on the ground, as long as it landed on carpet. If it were to land on cement or tile, it probably wouldn't make it through the trauma unscathed. Because it is built so sturdy, it's a little heavy and it could be dangerous if it were to be wildly flung around. Just be careful, as it's easy to get carried away trying to land the golf ball on the tee.
There are probably only two problems with the Golf Ball Water Globe. The first one is simply the difficulty some will have getting the golf ball onto the tee. It can be frustrating and could certainly lessen the thrill of the toy. But, if you can eventually get the ball on the tee, the feeling is quite euphoric. The second issue is the price of the toy. It averages around $20 and I think that's a little high for something so simple. Like I mentioned, it's well constructed but for what the product actually offers, it a little pricey. It could be a nice gift to give a colleague for a birthday or the holidays if they have the right personality. Some people might just use it as a paperweight, which would only be handy if they work in a wind tunnel.
The Golf Ball Water Globe is a neat toy as well as conversation piece. It can provide hours of entertainment and you'll be able to impress your friends once you master the proper "ball-landing" technique. It might even get you a promotion or make you more attractive to the opposite sex*. It will certainly be right at home on your desk, always around the help ease the stress during a difficult day or monotonous conference call or meeting. I think that most people that enjoy challenging puzzles or toys will certainly enjoy having a Golf Ball Water Globe within arms reach.
