Pros: This is a good price for a utensil that works really well.
Cons: I wish it had cup or ounce measurements on the bowl.
The Bottom Line: If you need a food scale to measure up to five pounds, this one is easy to use and does a great job for the price.

| Prepoia's Full Review: Good Cook Diet Scale |
About a hundred years ago, I belonged to the (in)famous Weight Watchers Club. I think that now it is an organization, but I digress. I belonged to it because I was overweight after having had two babies in three years. It worked for me but I always hated all the thinking, planning, measuring, and weighing foods. I had a diet scale and I swear that I spent days, weeks, and months thinking about food. What will I eat, can I eat it, how much of it is the right amount, what will I eat, etc? I had never thought about food so much in my whole life!
Well now, about a hundred years later, I have joined Weight Watchers again. I am overweight because I dont have any little babies or children to run after and take care of. My children have not introduced me into the grandparent hood, so theres no exercise in my life.
When joining the program, I was happy to learn that all I had to do was count points. I didnt have to weigh, measure, and think about food; I just had to figure the points of each food I wished to digest. Hah! What I found was that food portions is the jargon used for weighing and measuring. So, after a week of looking and figuring points, I knew that I once again needed to purchase a food scale. You can eat whatever your heart desires but it is sometimes necessary to weigh how much youre eating. Yes, on the point plan you can have lunchmeat, for example. But, it says 3 oz. of lunchmeat. If you buy the packaged kind, you could figure it out without a scale. But, I buy Italian lunchmeats (like mortadella and proscutti) and it is sliced for you each time. Well, 3 oz. can vary from meat slicer to meat slicer. Some make it thin and some dont. So I couldnt automatically say that three slices equaled 3 oz.
After deciding that a food scale would be helpful, I stopped at Meijers to pick one up. However, I experienced sticker shock. They did not sell one for less than $25.00. So, I tried Kmart. There I found two kinds of food scales that were basic and the same yet with different brand names. Both cost the same, $9.99. One was Home Essentials and the other one was Good Cook. I chose the Good Cook one because Ive used other of their products and have always been happy with them.
This is not a digital or fancy model. It is a basic weight scale that measures up to 5 pounds of food. It is white plastic and there is no assembly. You merely take the weigher out of the box and place the small bowl on top of it. Once the bowl is on top, you adjust the weight of the bowl until the ounces read zero. Youre then set to go (or to measure at least).
THE BASE
The base is circular and about six and one half inches at the widest (bottom) part. There is a clear plastic ring that encircles the base that shows the measurements from 0 ounces to 5 pounds. It looks like a ruler measurement in ounces and pounds. This ring has a red plastic mark that moves to the correct weight once youve put weight on the scale. The top of this base is a small plastic circle on which you can put foods and weigh them. However, if the food size is bigger than the 3 or 4 inch diameter, you will need to use the bowl for accuracy.
THE BOWL TOP
The bowl is white plastic too and it is about 6 inches in diameter at the top and about four at the bottom. It has a pour spout and a side handle. These are great features to have if you are measuring liquids. I do wish, however, that there was cup measuring notches on the bowl. That would let the user learn what so many ounces of soup, etc. looks like so it wouldnt have to be measured every time. However, the bowl is solid with no measurements on it. The bowl has a bit of a groove around the bottom so it fits snuggly and easily onto the scale base.
Once the bowl is on the top of the scale base; slide the clear measurement ruler around until it hits zero. Put in your food and then look at the weight that registers.
I did not see any colors except for the white which I bought. So if you need a certain color, you might want a different brand. The plastic composition is hard plastic. Ive dropped the bowl and it didnt crack but with hard plastic, it might under the right circumstances. The bowl is dishwasher safe but I usually just clean it with soap and water as soon as Ive used it. We have hard water and since its white, I dont want it to turn yellow (theres not much uglier than hard water yellow sitting out on my cupboard.) Once my Weight Watchers enlistment is over and Im at my perfect weight, this unit will be easy to store in a cupboard because its size wont use up much space.
Do I recommend this food scale? I absolutely do. It does the job at a value price.
