faeriewing's Full Review: Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett - Good Omens: The ...
I first saw this book in the bookstore and groaned. 'Not another Bible-thumping story of the apocalypse,' I thought. Then, the names of the authors jumped off of the cover. Forget that first thought--I let out a giggle that they must've heard all the way over in the Religion section. With Neil Gaiman's morbid sense of humor and Terry Pratchett's sense of absolute silliness, this was far from anything I first expected.
For me, the absolute best part of this book is how the authors bring up fairly valid points: Satan was a fallen angel. His son, the Antichrist, is going to be of angel stock, not demon stock. It depends on the upbringing of the Antichrist on how the whole Apocalypse goes. Also, it also gives another thought: everything is part of God's plan, and God works in mysterious ways. Who's to say that all of this--every single little bit of it--isn't part of the plan from above?
Theological mode off. Okay. The writing in this novel is amazing. It's hilarious. I was mildly upset that Death was Pratchett's Death and not Gaiman's, but Pratchett's Death is an absolute hoot. I was just waiting for the Death of Rats to show up.
