Good Omens is a truly superb book. I haven't previously experienced any of Neil Gaiman's work (he is listed as a comic writer) but I have been a long time fan of Terry Pratchett. I am sure that most people will have heard of Pratchett's best-selling Discworld series - need I say more?
The central characters are the angel Aziraphale and the fallen angel (demon) Crowley. These two bumbling buddies, who are slightly too old and too humanised to cope with the advent of Armageddon spend their time trying to prevent the Anti-Christ (Adam) from growing up either completely evil or completely good. Nurture over nature so to speak. Unfortunately, they concentrate their efforts on the wrong boy. And so the high speed plot zooms on with only the guidance of 'The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter', a descendant of the prophetess and a newly recruited Witchfinder Private to steer the increasing throng of characters along.
If you want fun and some light-hearted escapism, then this is the book for you. I can't even remember where I acquired my copy (hence the ridiculous price of £3.99 which in today's terms would probably buy a sheet of paper as opposed to the whole book) but it has been loved and dog-eared over the years.
Still not intrigued? Might I mention the four Horsemen (plus extras) of the Apocalypse, the Satanic Nuns of the Chattering Order of St Beryl, bewildered Tibetans, visiting Aliens and some elderly bowling Atlanteans.
There is something in this book for everybody (except those who've had their sense of humour surgically removed) especially over-worked accountants with a grudge against Forward Planning and the thousands of commuters who have long suspected that the M25 circling London has in fact a secret nature and agenda all of its very own ...
