This is going to be a difficult review to write. This was an excellently-made film on an awful subject. I can't say I enjoyed watching this movie because of the horrible topic. I'll start with the cast.
Elijah Wood .... Mark
Macaulay Culkin .... Henry
Wendy Crewson .... Susan
Quinn Culkin .... Connie
Daniel Hugh Kelly (I) .... Wallace
David Morse .... Jack
Mark's mother died of cancer. His father reluctantly takes a business trip to Japan, leaving Mark with his Aunt Susan and Uncle Wallace. Their kids are Henry and Connie. Mark and Henry are close in age (8) and get along from the start, but then Mark starts to see Henry's dark side. He starts out trying to and eventually succeeding to kill animals with a homemade gun that shoots nails. Then he throws a scarecrow over a bridge into oncoming traffic causing a 10-car pileup. Henry even goes as far as to try to kill his little sister Connie. The more Mark tries to convince people of Henry's problem, the more they think he is acting out because of the death of his mother. The end is - well, I can't really describe it. It is suspenseful and predictable at the same time. You are neither happy nor unhappy with the outcome.
Elijah Wood, as usual, did a great job in this role. He was very convincing as a boy who just lost his mother, looking for every sign that she's still with him. He feels responsible for protecting all the people around him from the "evil" Henry. Macaulay Culkin, on the other hand, didn't quite fit in this part. He is mostly known as Kevin from Home Alone - a movie that I enjoyed. He switches gears to play Henry and I don't think he is as convincing or successful as Elijah Wood. It might not have been all his fault. The script for his lines were not realistic. The whole movie is a little unrealistic. After The Good Son, Culkin went on to make Richie Rich, something that suited him well. His career did not flourish after that. In fact, these roles did deter from the norm for both boys. We remember Wood as Nat Cooper from Forever young and North in North. Elijah Wood has gone on to make many movies, many of which I have seen. I am a huge Elijah Wood fan, as you may have already guessed. The Good Son has a very different theme and tone. It is very dark and unpleasant.
The Good Son is shot on location in Gloucester and Cape Ann, Massachusetts, Silver Bay and Two Harbors, Minnesota, and Las Vegas, Nevada. The desert scenery is beautiful. I am not suggesting you see this film. I am not saying stay away from it either. It is on television frequently, so you wouldn't have to potentially waste your money renting it. I would like to add that this is not for children. The violence alone would most definitely give them the wrong ideas about behavior.
Thanks to all who read and rate. :)
