Words are fun, which is why I enjoy the Good Time Word Seek magazine published by Penny Press.
What Is A Word Seek?
A typical Word Search puzzle contains a letter grid. Search the puzzle for words going across, down or diagonally without skipping letters.
Go a step further for more entertaining Word Search puzzles. Some provide no word list, replace the letters with numbers, have the words go in zigzag patterns, leave out all the vowels. I prefer Word Search puzzles with a twist, and this magazine provides lots of entertainment.
Magazine Description
This magazine measures 8 3/4 high x 5 7/8 wide and contains 130 pages. The Table of Contents lists the type of puzzle with the page number. The puzzle solutions are at the back of the magazine (each puzzle includes the page where the solution is located).
The front and back covers are in color. The rest of the pages are similar to newspaper, only a thicker quality. The black ink does not rub off on the fingers. About four pages of advertising are sprinkled throughout the magazine.
My Experiences
This magazine is sized to easily slide into a carrying bag, large pocket or car glove compartment. I like to fold the magazine when solving puzzles. After handling the Good Time Word Seek magazines for awhile, the spine cracks. The pages don't fall out, though.
I prefer using ink when doing puzzles. Pencil isn't dark enough for me. I find gel pens and ballpoint pens work well and the ink doesn't show on the opposite side of the page. On occasion, I enjoy using colored highlighters. However, the highlighter will seep through to the other side of the page. So I only use highlighter when the opposite side of the magazine page has been solved using ink. As a note, yellow highlighter is difficult to see against the pages.
The puzzles in this magazine are fun. There is a large variety. Some of my favorites include the following:
Zigzag -- The words form an angle instead of going in a straight line.
Two for One -- Two diagrams are on the page with one word list. The word only appears in one of the diagrams.
Patchwords -- Like a crazy quilt, the words form irregularly shaped blocks. Every letter in the puzzle is used.
Quotable -- The word list when read is a quote. The quote is broken into groups of one to three words that are found in the puzzle.
Here and There -- Two letter grids are provided with no word list. Six-letter words are hidden in both diagrams, but only seven six-letter words are hidden in both diagrams. Find the words.
Letter Boxes -- This is challenging. The grid is filled with mostly empty squares and looks somewhat like a crossword puzzle. Determine which words fit where to fill every square.
Places, Please -- Another challenge. Groups of words are assigned a number. Find that number in the grid and insert the words correctly to complete the puzzle.
This magazine also has puzzles with no word lists, where the vowels are removed from the grid, where numbers and letters are mixed (like license plate numbers), puzzles where the last letter of one word forms the first letter of the next word. There are also plenty of themed puzzles, many of them relating to television, movies, songs or history.
Pricing
The per issue cost is $2.99 in the United States and $3.79 in Canada. According to the inside of the magazine, a year subscription (6 bimonthly issues) in the United States costs $17.94, and is $22.94 in other countries.
My local pharmacy often sells this magazine on sale for 89-cents an issue. So I prefer to buy it from the store at that discount price.
Summary
The Good Time Word Seek magazine is fun. I enjoy the huge word search variety. It's hard to become bored when circling words in this magazine!
