We bought Goodnight Moon Lap Book, written by Margaret Wise Brown, about two years ago, and my four year old still loves us to read it to her. Its a great short and sweet bedtime story for young ones.
Goodnight Moon is basically about saying goodnight to all the objects in one green bedroom of a little bunny. If first starts out mentioning that there is a telephone and a red balloon and then your child has to finish the sentence And a picture of.
The book goes on to say goodnight to the two pictures in the room of the cow jumping over the room and the three bears sitting on chairs. Then we say goodnight to mittens, kittens, toyhouse, and mouse. Next we say goodnight to the objects on the nightstand, a comb, brush, and mush.
And then it gets a bit repetitive, but for a young child it is still enjoyable. At the end we say goodnight to the stars, the air, and noises everywhere.
Goodnight Moon is illustrated by Clement Hurd. The pictures are bright, and busy, and colorful. The book is hard, so it is easy to look at the pictures in full detail. There are so many objects in the room. There are two black and white pictures of the two pictures hanging on the wall of the room of the cow jumping over the moon and the three little bears sitting on their chairs.
I love that there is so much rhyming, bears with chairs, toyhouse and mouse, kittens and mittens. And the reading is very simple. There is about one sentence on every page. My four year old can almost read it by her self.
For each sentence, the child can look around the very busy picture and look for the objects we are saying goodnight. So, in turn, it makes the child pay attention to detail.
The pages are very thick and hard to damage or rip.
All in all, its a cute short story in a big lap size book.
It is available at Amazon for $10.39 at http://www.amazon.com/Goodnight-Moon-Margaret-Wise-Brown/dp/0694016756
