Almacks's Full Review: Margaret Wise Brown - Goodnight Moon: Pw Zoo Hli
Goodnight Moon was written more than 50 years ago, in the 1940s. It is one of the softest and sweetest books ever written for small children. What is it about? Well, it's not really "about" anything. A little baby bunny rabbit is saying goodnight to all the things in his room as the room darkens and night falls. He says goodnight to his toys and his balloon, the pictures on his walls, a "little toy house and a young mouse", a "little old lady whispering Hush" (she is there until the bunny falls asleep and then leaves her knitting on the rocking chair").
This is a perfect book to wind a child down and get him or her ready for bed. It is gentle and kindly, but not long or dull. The pictures are more like small paintings than typical book illustrations. The room looks like a realistic child's room. If not for the fact that the little boy and the old lady are bunnies, it could be any real child's room, with toys and books on the shelves and the floor. It is very easy for a small child to identify with this nighttime world.
This is an old fashioned book. It was written in 1947, and there is an appealing gentleness to it that is too often lacking in today's "hipster" books for children. It has a whimsical sense of humor. All children giggle at "Goodnight comb. Goodnight brush. Goodnight Nobody. Goodnight Mush". It winds a child down to sleep with a gentle goodnight kiss in a safe and secure world where the red balloon will always be on the ceiling, the bowl will always be full of mush, the kittens will always play with the mittens, and the three little bears will still be in the chairs when he wakes up in the morning.
