| newtownbeans's Full Review: Goodyear Assurance TripleTred Tire |
Not too long ago I purchased new tires for my two Toyota Camrys. On the recommendation of my service repair dealer, I installed Avon tires on both these cars. It wasn't very long before these tires started to show serious wear. The Avons on my older Camry had worn out so quickly (less than 20K miles) that my dealer was able to pro-rate them and install replacement Dunlops at a small charge. It wasn't too long after that when the tires on the other Camry also started to show extreme wear. Since I wasn't too thrilled with the Dunlops. I decided to do some research into replacement tires for this car.
My son had recommended the Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread because he had these tires on his Honda Accord before he sold it and he was very pleased with them. I also did some research on several websites, read the Consumer Reports review, checked the Epinions postings and spoke with a few tire dealers for their opinions on these tires and their experience with the people who had them installed as far as complaints, etc. It became obvious that there was a great reputation and history behind this product so I decided that these would go on my '95 Toyota Camry which had only 60K miles on it.
My next step was to shop for the best price. Several tire dealers, including large chains such as Town Fair Tire quoted prices of $500. or more for 4 tires including installation. I also checked with TireRack.com which would ship them to my service shop where they could be installed. The cost to do this which would include shipping, balancing, mounting, valve stems etc. still exceeded $500. Finally I found a tire dealer, Mavis Discount Tires, which would install these tires for an out-the-door price of $457., including mounting, balancing, new valve stems and tax for tire size 195R70-14. Their price also included free tire rotations for the life of the tires. Not a bad deal, so I had them put on and can report that I am extremely satisfied with my decision.
The tires are rated by the manufacturer as having an "A" for traction, "B" for temperature and a "740" for tread wear. Goodyear claims an 80,000 mile warranty on the treads, which is hard to believe, but I would be more than happy to get 60K on them. So far, I have found these tires to meet all of the claims, specifications and recommendations that I have been told. The traction is superb on dry or wet roads. Handling is excellent even at speeds exceeding 70 MPH. Noise is minimal even at high speed. Ride comfort is very good, a perfect balance between soft and hard. I have not had the chance to try them on ice or in snow, but I expect they will be at least adequate. The ride comfort is so much better than my old Avons and in fact better than any other tire I have experienced in 50 years of driving. They also look great. The tread pattern is quite striking and the sidewall appearance is very appealing and complementary. I have read some reviews here where it is recommended that they not be used on rims with hubcaps because of the tendency to spin and push the hubcaps off under certain driving conditions, but I have not experienced this problem on my '95 Camry which has hubcaps.
Since the tires are still relatively new I cannot comment on their long time wearability, but I am confident that they will at least produce an acceptable tread life especially since my driving is mostly local and not so punishing to tires. I have great hopes for them and can recommend them to anyone looking for excellent all season tires at a reasonable price.
