| sgtwyatt's Full Review: Goodyear Eagle RSA Passenger/Performance Tire |
In 2001 I purchased a Chevrolet Monte Carlo back in '01 it came with a set of Goodyear Eagle RS/A H-rated 225x60x16 tires.
I drove on these tires for three years and about 40,000 miles; during that entire period I was very dissatisfied with their performance.
In Los Angeles, where the first two years of driving occurred on generally dry pavement, these tires gripped the road very poorly. Even when brand new sharp cornering produced noticeable skidding and squealing. As soon as water was added to the equation, the problems were compounded and fishtailing around corners became quite an easy thing to accomplish. As the tires began to wear hydroplaning tendencies quickly developed as well.
On straight, smooth, dry surfaces these tires did perform well. Driving along a straight stretch of highway in ideal conditions these tires produced little road noise or vibrations and made for a smooth ride. However, these benefits were overshadowed by the obvious lack of performance in less-than-optimal conditions.
Year three of my ownership of these tires found me living in Rochester, NY where I now had to contend with year-round rain and one of the highest snowfall amounts in the country (overage of around 85 inches per year).
As I left the congestion of Los Angeles city streets and gained the open spaces of upstate New York expressways, hydroplaning became a very common occurrence with these tires when it rained. When it snowed (even a light dusting) these tires gave up and didn't know what to do. Driving in the snow was scary at times, and very unpleasant.
With all that said and done, the tires did hold up well to wear and even at about 40,000 miles (and a mix of both heavy city driving and highway driving in various conditions) still had a considerable amount of treadlife remaining. Were it not for the abysmal performance I most likely would have continued to drive upon them for some time to come.
Unfortunately, living in the Snow capital of the Northeast I needed to invest in a better-performing set of tires and ultimately chose the BF Goodrich Traction TA/H series of tire (which I have reviewed separately). The Goodyear Eagle RS/As are terribly overpriced for their mediocre-at-best performance and I highly recommend you steer clear of these and look elsewhere.
