| artic00cat's Full Review: Goodyear Wrangler MT Truck/SUV Tire |
After going through an ordeal with the BFGOODRICH Long Trail T/A tires I decided to switch the tires on my Toyota 4x4. I was looking for something a little larger and more aggressive. So I went for something much larger and much more aggressive. The tire of choice the Goodyear MT 31x10.50.
I used these tires for approximately 6 months before trading in the old Toyota for a full size truck. I travel 25 miles one way to work for a total of 250 miles a week and 1000 miles a month not including any personal travel. In reality I probably travel 1200 - 1300 miles a month. So the tires were used for a decent amount of time, including winter driving.
First off if you are looking for a quite and smooth riding tire, then steer clear of these tires. The aggressive tread design causes excessive road hum and minor front end vibration due to the size of the lugs. The tires are unidirectional which means they only are intended to spin in one direction, thus 2 specific right tires and 2 specific left tires. They can only be rotated from front to back or visa versa. They cannot be rotated side to side or in the conventional means you would rotate a standard tire. The manufacturer also states that the tires are for extreme off road applications and due to their design may not wear as well in highway use.
The MT's handle really well on dry pavement. They corner with ease and stop on a dime. As stated before the faster you start to move the louder the tires will begin to hum. There was no excessive squealing around corners at 40 mph or over and the side walls are solid unlike the BFGOODRICH Long Trail T/A. When you shake the bed of the pickup , the truck does not continue to shake long after you have stopped. Thus showing the difference a good side wall construction can make.
Under wet conditions these tires once again were solid performers. They rarely slide or spun even when giving gas to the tires. Now mind you that I had 31 X 10.50 tires on a 4cyl , if it were an 8cyl the tires more than likely would have spun any ways. These conditions existed even with no weight in the bed of the truck to aide in traction. The tires in this condition were responsive and accurate.
These tires love the mud folks, the open tread design provide excellent self cleaning properties that throw the mud free of these tires. Preventing the caking effect that mud can have on a tire. As can be expected the tires do slide and spin a little under this application but it is not extreme. Lowering the air pressure in the tires also aides greatly in the traction capabilities under these circumstances.
Snowy travel is no longer a problem when you have these tires. As with all other applications these tires are relatively responsive in the snow. Minimum slippage occurs while cornering, providing that you are doing a reasonable speed. In 3 inches of snow and under the tires in most cases bite right through the snow to the pavement below providing good acceleration properties and good stopping qualities. Obviously these attributes are also increased in my case by adding weight to the empty bed of my pickup.
Over all the Goodyear MT's are great tires. They tend to be a little pricey but the are well worth the money. The seemed to wear barely at all in the 6000+ of highway driving that they endured on my truck, much of which was at 55 mph or over. They are rather noisy for most applications , but if you can deal with the road hum you definitely are getting a quality tire.
