GOODYEAR FORTERA HL REVIEW

Written: Dec 06 '03

Pros:Dry traction, Wet Traction, Snow traction, Noise, Cornering, Ride,
Cons:fuel economy
The Bottom Line: If you want a solid SUV tire with great traction and SMOOTH ride and don't mind the lower mpg, buy these!

Since Epinions does not have a new category for this tire I'm forced to write it under the Goodyear Wrangler RTS. Epinions states, "At this time, Epinions is not accepting suggestions for additions to our product database. In the future, we intend to provide tools for you to help us expand our offerings."

So here is my review of the New Goodyear Fortera HL, for SUV owners. I purchased the Fortera's to replace my Eagle LS's. The own a Jeep Grand Cherokee and the dealer stock tires that came with it were Eagle LS's and they rode very well but I felt I needed a slightly more aggressive tire tread. I chose the Goodyear Fortera's. They are now considered the top of the line in the SUV category at Goodyear. I actually did some shopping around and the tire I really wanted was the Michelin's Cross Terrain. When I went to purchase the Michelin's, they were extremely expensive. So I wandered into a Goodyear and then I found out about the Goodyear Fortera's. After that I looked them up and they were just as good as the Cross Terrain's, on paper that is.

The price was almost the same, but Goodyear was running a promotion since they just came out. I have owned the Fortera's for 5 months now, almost 10,000 miles. I simply love the tires.

Very good dry traction. I have all-wheel drive and they don't seem to "rub" when I turn in tight spaces. Emergency stopping seems, "absolute & unforgiving". Wet Traction is excellent. No slips at all, where as the LS's I would slip a little because my Jeep Gr. Cherokee is slightly overpowered with the V8. Hydro-Resistance is Excellent. I would drive through some very heavy rain storms and into some very nice size standing water puddles and it seems to cut them with a knife. Cornering seems also very good. Steering Response is very "exact". No faltering or shimmeying. Ride Comfort is very smooth, not as smooth as the LS's but close enough. Noise comfort is also very impressive, given the more aggresive tread it has over the Eagle LS's. I wish I can give you a Tread Wear but it's still early. We just had 10 inches of snow riding through some pretty deep snow, gave me a very huge smile.

One big disadvantage I found out is, the poor or reduced fuel effiency. I lost approximately 15% reduction in miles per gallon of fuel. With the Eagle LS's I was averaging about 17 mpg. My Cherokee has a V8 and I was very pleased with this figure. Since changing over to the Fortera's, I'm averaging 14.8 mpg. So I'm not very happy about that.
