Pop open a Goose Island Blonde Ale and you are greeted by a hazy golden color, coupled with an aroma of malt, hops, and a slight scent of fruit. This beer has a sweet flavor at first, which is then balanced by the taste of hop bitterness. This beer uses Mt. Hood hops which give it a unique taste. The finish is dry and the aftertaste is malty and somewhat fruity. The alcohol level is 4.7 percent by volume.
Goose Island has produced some pretty good beer products over the years. This beer is ok, but nothing special. It just doesn't have any unique or interesting taste characteristics to make you want to come back for more.
Blonde Ale is the type of beer that could be matched up with just about any pub grub, due to its balanced flavor. It is a decent enough beer, but it is not as flavorful as the other malt beverages in the Goose Island product lineup. It did win a medal at the 1999 Great American Beer Festival, but I still think the other Goose Island products are superior. On the other hand, it is better than other blonde lager- styles and it would be a good beer to give to someone who is not yet accustomed to drinking microbrewed beer.
So do blondes really have more fun? Well, when you consider the other, more full- bodied beers that Goose Island offers, like Hex Nut Brown and Oatmeal Stout, I would have to cast my vote for the brunettes.
