| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Goose Island Honker's Ale |
I first tried Honker's Ale while I was waiting, between flights, at the Chicago O'Hare Airport. I had not yet tried a product of Goose Island Brewery, so I didn't really know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted this ale. Honker's has an aroma of hops, with a slight amount of fruitiness. It has an amber color and an unmistakable hoppy character. The beer is dry and crisp, more bitter than sweet, but not bitter in an overbearing way.
The alcohol content of Honker's is only around 4.7 percent by volume, so it is not as strong as some people might think. The real strength is not in the alcohol, it's in the taste of the hops. This ale would make a fine companion to prime rib or steak, or a good beer just to sit back with, relax, and savor the hop flavor.
Honker's Ale has received many awards and above- average reviews from beer critics. Its highest honor was a gold medal in the 1997 Great American Beer Festival, the first beer to win a gold medal winner for the Goose Island Brewing Co.
I, for one, prefer the taste of hops in my beer. But to others, hops are an acquired taste, so you should keep that in mind when you consider whether or not to give Honker's a try. If you appreciate craft beer at all, especially extra- hopped beer, then you should seek out a six pack of Honker's. It is somewhat difficult to find, but the rewards are worth the search.
