| ejjiii's Full Review: Gordon Biersch Blond Bock |
In my never-ending search for the perfect lager, I have run across another candidate: Gordon Bierch’s Blond Bock. This microbrew beer adheres to Germany’s beer purity law (Reinheitsgebot), which states that beer can only have 4 ingredients: yeast, hops, barley, and water. I think that any beer loving German would be proud to serve this beer to his guests.
First, a little explanation of what constitutes a Bock beer. Bock is a style of lager beer. Lager beer is a beer that is bottom fermented and aged longer than ales, typically for 4-5 weeks to several months. These beers are brewed at lower temperatures (35-50 degrees Fahrenheit). The word “ lager” is a German word meaning to store. Bock beer was traditionally brewed at the end of the growing season (autumn), when barley and hops were at their peak. Bocks can be helles (pale colored) or dunkles (dark colored). There are also are doppelbocks (double bocks), which are very strong. According to the label on this beer, Bock beers were popular in the early 1600’s with monks who would brew and drink Bock beers to minimize hunger pains during fasting periods.
Gordon Biersch’s Blond Bock is a Blonde (therefore it is a helles) Bock that is very strong both in taste and alcohol content. This beer has a 7.1% alcohol content, which is very strong for a beer. It also is strong in taste. There is a very strong malty flavor to this beer. The color is somewhere between the yellow of a pilsner, and the amber of the Marzen beers. The head is nothing too special. It is more white than creamy, and is thin and short lived. However, the flavor more than makes up for that small transgression.
This is a winter type beer, the type to drink on a cold evening. I would not serve this beer with foods that have a delicate taste or flavor, as this beer would simply overwhelm the meal. Also be aware that the higher alcohol content gives it a considerable kick. Otherwise, this is a really good beer for any occasion.
Gordon Biersch is a local (to the San Francisco Bay Area) Microbrewery / Restaurant chain. Their line of beers are now found at almost all local grocery and liquor stores. Gordon Biersch’s beers tend to be pricey ($6.99 a six pack) but are often found on sale for 5.99. (I paid 5.99 for this six-pack.) At 5.99, this beer is a bargain. At 6.99 it is a value. I highly recommend this beer.
