Pros:Adds a new taste dimension to mixed drinks; Inexpensive

Cons:Nothing extraordinary; Could use more lime

The Bottom Line: This is a good, basic, inexpensive flavored vodka.

When it comes to adult beverages in any form, I’m generally a purist at heart. I like my beer to taste like grains, yeast, and hops; my gin to taste like herbs; and my vodka to taste like, well, alcohol. I don’t normally go for the “flavored” version of these distilled spirits and malt beverages, mainly because many of them taste so artificial. But every now and then, I give in and give one a try and my latest venture into the world of flavored spirits is Gordon’s Citrus Vodka, a lemon/lime vodka.

Basic Characteristics of This Vodka:

Gordon’s Citrus Vodka is completely clear with a smooth- flowing body that emits an aroma of fruit and alcohol. In many ways, the scent reminds me of flavored cough medications.

Tasting this vodka doesn’t yield any surprises. The taste begins with a slightly sweet sensation that tastes like lemons, limes, and oranges, with a small amount of salt. But this is quickly replaced by the taste of alcohol, all the way through to the finish. The citrus flavor is most noticeable in the aftertaste. Once the taste of alcohol and the characteristic alcohol burn has had time to dissipate, the flavors of citrus are left behind. At this point, the flavor is much like Seven- Up or Sprite.

This vodka is 70 proof, making it 35 percent alcohol by volume. It is made completely from distilled grains and natural fruit flavorings.

Drinks Made With This Vodka:

Gordon’s Citrus Vodka can be substituted in most any drink that calls for vodka, provided that the taste of citrus is compatible to the taste of the drink. Here are some more unique as well as some simple drinks to make with this flavored vodka:

Absolute Lemonade:

1 oz. Gordon’s Citrus Vodka
1 oz. Amaretto
2 oz. Sprite or Seven- Up
2 oz. Sweet and Sour mix

Shake all ingredients except the Sprite/Seven Up. Pour into a Collins glass and add the soft drink.

Dib Dab:

.5 oz. Gordon’s Citrus Vodka
.5 oz. Orange Vodka
1.5 oz. Blue Liqueur
1 oz. Sweet and Sour Mix
3 freshly squeezed limes

Shake all ingredients with ice and then pour into a hurricane glass. Add a dash of lemonade.

Lemon Twist:

3 oz. Gordon’s Citrus Vodka
1 oz. Dry vermouth

Shake with ice and then strain into a cocktail glass. Add a twist of lemon for garnish.

Pink Lemonade:

2 oz. Gordon’s Citrus Vodka
.5 oz. Raspberry Liqueur
2 oz Sweet and Sour Mix

Shake and serve over ice in a champagne glass.

Citrus Fizz:

1.5 oz. Gordon’s Citrus Vodka
4.5 oz. Sprite or Seven- Up

Combine over ice in a Collins glass and serve with a lime garnish

Citrus Cola:

1.5 oz. Gordon’s Citrus Vodka
4.5 oz. Coca- Cola

Combine over ice in a tall glass and serve with either a lemon or lime garnish

Final Thoughts:

Gordon’s Citrus Vodka is a newer product for me. I have noticed this flavored vodka nestled between the bottles of regular Gordon’s on the store shelves, but I had no interest in sampling until recently. I normally prefer my liquor (on the rare occasions that I consume it) clean and pure, with little or no added flavors.

With the popularity of flavored vodkas and other spirits on the rise, I decided it was time to give in and see if there was anything worthwhile with this latest spirit fad. I found out quickly that Gordon’s Citrus Vodka is a very direct and to the point type of spirit. It is obviously vodka, and there is obviously some citrus flavor, but there is little else besides these basic taste sensations, with the citrus notes coming through more and more in the aftertaste.

With this type of flavor, Gordon’s Citrus Vodka does offer some diversity and it does make a good mixer. I listed a few possible drinks above, but the fact is, this vodka can be mixed with about eighty percent of all drinks that call for regular vodka. The taste of citrus is one that combines well with many drinks, so substituting Gordon’s Citrus Vodka is often a good, tasty alternative to regular vodka. I have also found that the taste of a drink is enhanced with an added lime wedge. This vodka includes lemon and lime oils, but I prefer a little more lime flavoring.

One other appeal of Gordon’s Citrus Vodka is its price. It is less expensive than the flavored vodkas produced by the more popular brand names, like Smirnoff, Stoli, Seagram’s, and Absolut. There is also substantial savings for buying a larger bottle. The 750 ml sells for about $9.50. But for just four dollars more, you can get 2.33 times more vodka by purchasing the 1.75 liter bottle. This is a great bargain when broken down to its per- unit cost and it is about half as costly as Absolut and other more expensive brand names.

Overall, Gordon’s Citrus Vodka is an okay product and it turned out to be a little better tasting than I expected. It is less expensive than others and while its taste might be a little lacking in complexity, it delivers about what you expect for a bargain- priced distilled spirit with added flavors.
