Pros: Different from most of the radio crap you hear, funky,
Cons: None! I love this CD!
The Bottom Line: Gorillaz has a very distinct yet funky and cool style to their music. You should AT LEAST listen to a few songs and give them a chance!
There is no other way for me to express my feelings toward this album. It is so refreshing to listen to, unlike the radio music which eventually gets too homogeneous and boring. Gorillaz deviates from mainstream pop and rock, but not in such a way that is sounds completely alien or tasteless. This album’s got style!
I discovered Gorillaz while desperately trying to find some good quality music online @ amazon.com. I checked out the Indie Music section and under “Funk Rock” was where I uncovered this priceless treasure. I listened to a few samples and it was love at first, er, sound. :)
I would categorize the music as stylish, cool and mellow. It is the PERFECT blend of hip-hop, rap, FUNK, and rock – all while being, as I would call it, “trendy-mellow.” Gorillaz also has a wonderful blend of various instruments (trumpet, piano, and others I can’t identify), notably bass beats. The vocals are great too; the band members neither try to out-sing each other, nor attempt to sound like they were professionally trained by the likes of Celine Dion/Mariah Carey (which may be a negative for some I guess). They don’t scream to pop blood vessels. You can understand the words that come out of their mouths. Nothing is too fast – they take their time without being too slow or dragging. To me, they sing and rap how they know how to sing and rap. The result is an effortlessly, beautifully CHILL album.
There are a total of 18 tracks (if you count the hidden track) and there are only 2 that I don’t like! Now I’m sure you all know that liking EVERY song on an album can be a bit difficult (well, it is for me at least), so this was a REALLY GOOD catch for me. There have been only about 3 others of which I’ve shared such a sentiment.
I’ve never heard of Gorillaz prior to seeing it on amazon.com, so they appear to be a fairly unknown band, which would be why they are categorized under Indie Music @ amazon. However, they’ve just recently started getting some airtime with their 1st single, “Clint Eastwood.” I’m just hoping the radio won’t kill it like every damn song they play!
I guess you’re probably wondering what type of music I listen to as a point of reference of whether or not to trust this review. In all honesty, I try to be open-minded when it comes to music. Some of my favorites, aside from Gorillaz, are: Sarah MacLachlan, Jewel, Lauryn Hill, Tupac, Dido (another AWESOME artist! Read my review of her latest album here: http://www.epinions.com/content_10998288004), some Beastie Boys, the classic ‘80s/early ‘90s J, SOME radio songs (they can be quite catchy!), some Radiohead, UB40 (Labour of Love II), and I even appreciate classical music. The music that I just can’t seem to get into include heavy metal, folk, hardcore country, and that all that New Age stuff. *shrug*
The bottom line is that Gorillaz is THE album to have! We live in a time where teen pop and angry rap reign, so it is SO NICE to listen to something other than the hackneyed love themes, violence, and immature narratives set to music. Gorillaz is simply great music to listen to for those mellower, or just typical, days. Buy it, burn it, steal it – whatever! Just get the album! It is worth the money/time!!!
