The Gorillaz are both a real band and a cartoon band. The real band is secondary to the characters the portray. The cartoon band is a lot of fun. It includes a devil worshiping chain smoking bassist Murdoc (played by cartoonist Jamie Hewlitt), lead singer 2-D (played by Blur's Damon Albarn), a ten year old asian guitar playing girl (played by Miho Hatori) and zombie rapper Russel who has the soul of Del the Funkey Homosapian. The band is the coolest concept band since Kiss.
Musically they are as diverse and cool as the characters who play it. It is fusion of rap, folk, house, and other influences and styles blended together and poured out smooth. There are some really cool tracks on this album, like the Mtv favorite "Clint Eastwood" my other personal favorites are "M1A1", "Dracula", "Rock the House", and the remix of "Clint Eastwood". The music is very relaxed yet complex at the same time, its a good blend. Most of the lyrics are nonsensical, in the Beck Tradition, and they drop at the back story of the characters.
One of the coolest concepts of this band is that they do play live. "How does a cartoon band play live?" you ask. The band plays behind a screen that plays cartoons on it. Really an awesome idea if you think about it!
