Graco Harmony High Chair: For Less Than ½ of that Stupid Peg, I'll Keep It

Written: Jun 17 '04 (Updated Jun 17 '04)
Pros:oh, really. read the review. It's the only full review right now.
Cons:see above
The Bottom Line: The bottom line knew enough to get the cheaper model. Read why.

When I discovered I was pregnant with baby number three, I think the second sentence out of my husband was a sobbing: "There is NO WAY I can POSSIBLY survive another two years with that high chair (referring to my Peg Perego Prima Pappa High Chair). I felt I had suffered enough, and my husband agreed. I put my old Peg out to the curb when it was time to begin solids, and went in search of the high chair I'd always wanted: one that wasn't that Peg Perego. I returned home with the Graco Harmony High Chair - 3920.

~&~ The Basics ~&~

I purchased the Graco Harmony High Chair - 3920, where it comes in the pattern Bently Bear, a sort of olive green pattern with a bear print, with navy accents. The seat pad is wipeable, not machine washable, which means it generally won't stain.

The Graco Harmony High Chair - 3920 features a unique design with arched legs, which allows the chair to pull up to the table so long as the tray is over the top of your table, or the tray is off. There is actually a three-part tray on this high chair; the navy snack tray is the t-bar insert for this high chair, and has a cup insert as well as two snack inserts. On top of this, the regular tray slides on easily (using either a two-handed latch on the sides or a one-button latch on the front. This tray also has a cup holder, and on top of this tray, you can also snap on the dishwasher-safe insert, which has three divisions for food separation, as well as a cut-out to use the cup-holder.

The high chair has casters for easy movement, and an adjustable harness that can be used as a three-point or five-point restraint. There are four positions for the recline feature, and the height is adjustable as well. Both the height and the recline options are adjustable with one-hand, as is the folding feature.

Cleaning is as simple as wiping down the seat cover and all food-covered surfaces. The seat cover has only one hole at the bottom, for the t-bar on the snack tray, and it is easy to pull up and wipe underneath.

~&~ What I Love ~&~

Well, first of all, I'm so happy that my Peg Perego high chair is gone. Have I mentioned that already? Sorry. I really am excited. Compared to that chair, the Graco Harmony High Chair - 3920 is a dream come true. I can get the tray right up to my baby's tummy, keeping about half the food from dropping down into the seat (although not all; some does get down his sides). In addition, clean-up is a breeze! With only the one hole in the seat pad, the only place I have to clean around under the seat pad is the t-bar, and a simple lift and wipe underneath sweeps crumbs and food pieces to the footrest, where I can wipe them easily.

The seat pad wipes clean very easily, and the dark colors hide a multitude of stains that my old navy-and-white-check seat pad showed immediately. The straps also seem to clean more easily, but we'll have to see how that goes in the long run.

The changeable trays allow for a quick clean-up when the baby is done eating but wants to stay in his high chair and play while his brother and sister finish up. Just popping off the tray insert leaves me a clean tray underneath to put toys on, and the insert fits more easily into a sink for clean-up than an entire high-chair tray.

Assembly was much easier than I thought it would be, considering that such a big high chair came in such a tiny little box. I think I got the whole thing together in about 10 minutes with "help" from my two-year-old.

~&~ What I Don't Love ~&~

No high chair is perfect, and there are some minor annoyances I have with this high chair. First, while the tray pushes all the way into my baby's tummy, which our old chair did not, there are odd gaps in between the tray and the seat back. It probably won't be a problem once he is a little bit older, but right now, it's the perfect size for him to catch his chubby little arms and yell at me.

Secondly, the big claim of "dishwasher safe" for the tray insert is very funny. Graco, if you are listening, hah hah. I have a full-sized dishwasher, and there is absolutely no way I can fit this tray in there unless I have nothing else in the bottom rack. Now, I don't know about you, but I have to run my dishwasher once a day as it is with three kids and assorted bowls, plates, and sippy cups, but a separate load for the tray insert isn't about to happen.

Third, and this isn't specific to the Graco Harmony High Chair - 3920 per se, but this high chair is HUGE. ENORMOUS, in fact. High chairs seem to be getting bigger and bigger even as strollers are getting smaller and smaller, so if you are short on room and want this high chair up all day, good luck.

Fourth, the dumbest "accessory" ever: a bib bar in the back. Because, um, sure... I hang bibs like towels. This "feature" just cracked me right up.

Lastly, this high chair isn't the largest in terms of seat room. I put my 26-month-old in it just to check sizing, and he's at about the 50th percentile for size, and he looked a bit crowded. That might be because I'm used to seeing the baby in it, because he didn't seem uncomfortable, but if you have a larger child and want to use this seat until he or she is three, you might want to rethink.

~&~ Why This Harmony Model? ~&~

You may notice different prices on the Harmony lines, with this model at the cheaper price point of $69.99. The difference? The more expensive models have the following: a padded "booster" that goes into the seat, a tiny storage basket in the back, a flexible tray insert, and a toy bar. Are they worth the extra $20.00? Heck no. If there is one thing I've learned by now, it's that simpler is better when it comes to kid things, and this chair is no exception. Getting this model $20.00 cheaper, plus a $10.00 off Babies R Us coupon made this high chair a fantastic deal, and at less than half the price of the old one I was more than happy to put at the curb.
