lirubis's Full Review: Gran Patron Platinum Tequila 750ml
Great to see (finally!) a larger and updated list of tequilas up for rating.
I wonder why Gran Patron Platinum is at the top of the list. Being a long-time blanco tequila worshipper, I can easily name 10 better tasting brands that cost a small fraction of what GPP cost! However, the difference between this outrageously expensive blanco against its own brother is noticeable and favorable.
VISUALS
The color of GPP is wonderful: shiny like a diamond, superb light reflection, nice body and great legs. Like a good blanco should. This is really a nice LOOKING tequila, although I still find the bottle a bit too similar to Herradura Seleccion Suprema.... maybe it is just me.
SENSORIAL OVERLOAD
As soon as your nose gets close to this blanco, trouble begins: what is this spiky agave aroma? Not natural...too perfumy...not vegetal enough...the natural sweetness of cooked agave is not a trademark of this pricey specimen, Im afraid. There are some crispy citrus and floral elements as well, that swirl around the strong alcohol elements to be expected in a good blanco tequila. The balance between the agave, alcohol and secondary notes is nothing to brag about, unfortunately.
Now, when it comes the time to sip it down...
When so much money is involved, I expected a really grand flavor, texture, etc. Nop...not here. When you put this "grand" blanco against MUCH cheaper brands like Tesoro, 7 Leguas, 1921...even Herradura BSuave, the "grande tequila" in the cute expensive bottle comes pretty much as the naked king. There is just a tremendous lack of natural feel in here. The agave notes are good but taste a bit forced...too sweet and soft on the palate, the alcohol notes are just too lame to be taken seriously... it is mildly enjoyable, yes...
BOTTOM LINE
But this is definitely not worth spending $200 for a bottle. I find it evena bit insulting that you can find several blancos that cost around one tenth of what Gran Platino costs, and enjoy them ten times more. Compared to the "stock" Patron Blanco, it is much better, though. Big points go to the nice bottle.
I encourage you to go try a glass yourself, and put it to the test. Hope you have the $200 needed to take this baby home if you like it!
