When at America’s Best Value Motel , hubby began to look for a place to stay in our next town, Simi Valley, home to the Ronald Reagan Library. Hubby sought out other reviews on a popular lodging review site. They alluded that "male entertainment" would be fast and easy. I saw nothing of the sort and hubby teased me about that.
Simi Valley is a lovely place I would not mind livng. Unfortunately, a 1000 sf home would easily sell for $300,000. The hotel is lovely, sitting on what I perceive to be close to the edge of town. Modern, lovely, malls and restaurants are nearby. In fact, there is even a restaurant within the hotel. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is about $11 for an omelet, $15ish for lunch and $15-20ish for dinner. The breakfast waitress, Rachel, was happy to share the 3 menus with me. Non internet reservations receive muffins, juice, coffee, already made waffles with hot syrup and a few other things. There is also manager's welcome that you may wish to pay extra for. We chose to be on our own for breakfast and no before dinner drinks, saving money.
Coffee is complimentary as you leave through the front door, as well as a basket of apples at the front desk. I really appreciated them to help take the edge off my hunger.
The desk clerk was very nice and helped us check into our room. Unfortunately, our room was down a long hallway and around the corner. Close to our room was a soda machine I could really use. I put coins in to purchase a 20-ounce bottle of soda for $2. An ice machine was nearby. I tried coins and bills, but the machine would accept neither. I mentioned this to the desk clerk. She mentioned that a little store about 20’ from the front desk. The prices were the same. Also sold were several varieties of candy and 5 postcards for about $1.50.
Our room with 2 full beds was a bit chilly. We turned on the typical motel air conditioner/heater. It did not turn off, as the thermostat did not appear to be working.
The bathroom had an irritating spring on the door that they said was mandated. The bathroom door always closed on it’s own. There was a panel under the sink that was replaced, but the trim wasn’t painted. There is an arch as you advance from the bathroom to the bedroom. The vinyl wallpaper was messed up due to water problems. It looked pretty nice, overall, but there were bubbles.
The bathroom was clean. Bar soap and shampoo were provided, as well as a hair dryer. I do not know if there was an escape plan posted, but there were green, lit exit signs as appropriate in the hallways.’ I saw no security personnel, but there was a state mandated exit plan posted on the door, along with at least one smoke alarm.
I wanted to use my laptop. I contacted the front desk. They said there was an Ethernet cable in the front desk and to use that. I made a big groan, as I wasn’t even sure our laptop had an Ethernet port, but it did. Once I connected the computer to the cable, I wasn’t sure how to connect to the internet. The front desk said to connect the cable, then shut off the computer and reboot. I saw the warnings by the telephone about possibly being charged for long distance. She assured me I wouldn’t be, and I wasn’t.
Our room had two comfortable beds and soft pillows. The room featured 3 sets of plantation shutters. We watched TV, which was in an armoire and worked well. The doors stuck out into the pathway between the TV and the bed. It was annoying. We also had a microwave and mini refrigerator in our room.
Leaving, we didn’t have the address of our next stop, the Hearst Castle. We asked the front desk clerk who was very helpful. She pointed us to the Business Person’s area. Unfortunately, someone was using the computer. I asked if she could look up the address. She did oblige us and printed it off, smiling all the time.
Check in is 3PM, although the clerk mentioned that we could check in as early as noon if the room was ready. Check out is 12 noon. They matched the internet rate of: $60 which does not include an express breakfast nor nightly cocktails. Even though we made our reservation in person, we were given the webrate.
