Written: Jul 30, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:great in recipes or from the spoon, zero fat, sugar substitute, jar lasts long time
Cons:may cost a bit more than other brands
The Bottom Line: Grandma’s Molasses is an all-natural, quality product. My baking tastes great!
Our family has used Grandma’s Molasses for years and years. In my weekly race through the grocery store, I added another jar to the cart.
Description & Nutrition
Grandma’s Molasses comes in a 12-ounce glass jar with a metal screw-top lid. This product contains 100-percent unsulphured molasses. In case you are wondering, molasses is manufactured from sugar cane. A serving size is one tablespoon, and there are 24 servings in the jar.
There are 70 calories per serving with zero fat. Sodium is 20mg, Potassium 110mg, with 16g Carbohydrates. It is also a good source of iron.
My Experiences
I didn’t realize I used molasses in so many recipes until I started thinking about this review. I can remember my grandmother enjoying a tablepoon of molasses every morning. My grandmother and mother used Grandma’s Molasses, and I’ve always been happy with the product, so continue with the tradition.
Primarily, I use molasses in my baking. The family loves my homemade cookies and breads, and several of the recipes use molasses. I add molasses mostly to my baked goods but it is great in other recipes too. Add some to baked beans for added flavor. It also makes a nice taste change in cooked oatmeal. I admit that when a measuring spoon is empty of its molasses contents, I sample the remainder. It tastes good! A little molasses goes a long way, too. So a 12-ounce jar will last awhile.
One thing about molasses is that it is a sticky, gooey substance that can create a mess. Just think of the Great Molasses Flood that happened inBostonin 1919. An enormous storage tank exploded, cascading a tidal wave of molasses through the streets in the North End. Thankfully, handling a bottle of Grandma’s Molasses is nowhere near as dangerous. There is a knack to pouring the molasses from the bottle. Tip the bottle, slowly pouring the molasses into the measuring cup. As the molasses reaches the correct measuring mark, sharply twist and tilt up the jar to cut off the molasses stream. The molasses ribbon will curve around the upper rim of the jar. Immediately use a damp paper towel to wipe the top of the bottle. If the molasses is left to dry, it will create a sticky residue, which will make the lid more difficult to screw onto and off the jar.
I store the jar on a cabinet shelf. I also make sure the cabinet has washable shelf paper in it just in case some molasses slides down the side of the bottle to coat the jar bottom. (This has happened when family members used the jar and were in too much of a rush to keep it clean.) I don’t want molasses rings on my wooden cabinet shelves.
If you need recipe ideas, the website for Grandma’s Molasses has about thirty recipes. The recipe database is searchable by keyword, too.
Purchasing
My local grocery store sells a 12-ounce jar for $3.79.
Summary
Grandma’s Molasses has always delivered a quality product that tastes great. I will continue to buy it. What a sweet treat!
