| infogal's Full Review: Gray's Papaya |
Gray's Papaya is a New York institution, loved by customers of all social and economic classes. When I first moved to NYC as a very young, very poor, actor/student, I could rely on Gray's as a place to get a well-balanced, healthy, and affordable meal in a matter of seconds.
Gray's hot dogs are all completely natural beef with no fillings, by-products or preservatives. You can have them plain, with saurkraut or onions as well as, of course, ketchup and mustard. Two good size dogs and a cup of their famous freshly squeezed papaya juice is "The Recession Special" (so titled in the 80's and hasn't gone up in price since) for about $1.95.
The Papaya juice is heavenly. I'm not a big juice or fruit fan myself and had never tried papaya before. At Gray's its almost like a fruit milkshake. I've read that papaya is one of the most nutritious fruits, very good for digestion and energy.
You'll never have to wait more than five minutes at Gray's, and that's only when there is a long line. They're open 24 hours and are a favorite spot for the post-bar-closing crowd. On New Year's Eve, they've had lines around the block!
Gray's location (72nd and Broadway) is highly convenient. 72nd street is a stop for both the 1/9 and 2/3 subway trains.
