| Vikesfan80's Full Review: Graycliff P.G. |
The legendary Graycliff Hotel, located in Nassau, Bahamas, has long been known as one of the finest resorts in the world. No expense is spared to assure that the guest has the best possible experience when staying on-property. Enrico Garzaroli, who owns the exceptional resort, is a passionate cigar lover, and therefore was never satisfied with the quality of the cigars that were not only in his collection, but also the cigars being sold in his on-property humidors. So, what does a resort owner with the highest standards do about it? He teams up with renowned Cuban cigar maker Avelino Lara to create the finest cigars to pair with the fine wines and foods served at the resort. The result was a cigar line as legendary as the resort itself, and worthy of carrying the Graycliff name.
The PG, which is the designation for their robusto, is available in all of Graycliff cigar lines. This review will cover the Red Label (original blend) cigar. Just by appearance, it is obvious that this is a superior cigar. The 50 ring gauge, 5 ½ inch PG is beautifully constructed and contains the finest tobacco blends in the industry. The wrapper on the Red Label is a deep chocolate maduro, grown in Indonesia. The filler and blend is a combination of Brazilian, Dominican, and Nicaraguan tobaccos. The result of this combination is obvious from the first draw of this magnificent cigar.
From the cut you can see the quality and precision that goes into making each cigar. The construction is excellent, as the roll is perfect; not too tight, and not too loose. This allows the cigar to breathe well, and gives a wonderful draw. Once the cigar is lit, the flavor that is produced from this blend of tobacco becomes instantly obvious. The taste of the cigar is consistent from beginning to end. On the palate, the initial flavor is a sweet oak and chocolate flavor. As the taste lingers, you begin to sense the nuances of the cigar. There is an essence of fruit in the aftertaste, and very little spice, which is unusual for a maduro. The smell of the smoke is what captures most of the people that surround you. A very chocolaty, fruity essence makes even the most vigilant of cigar-haters stand up and take notice. This is no ordinary cigar.
The cigar is medium-bodied, but is one that may convert the smoker who prefers milder, Connecticut-shade wrappers, for instance, to the dark-side! The cigar holds up very well, and the ash is very sturdy. The burn is very even, and seems to be consistently even, as I have smoked many of these, and I am yet to find a bad one in the bunch!
The added bonus of this fine cigar is the fact that it does not leave a lingering bitter or unpleasant after-taste, which I have found with many other cigars (Fuente Fuente Opus X, for example). This cigar is truly one of the best I have ever smoked, including many of the Cubans. This quality and consistency seems to exist in each of the Graycliff lines (Pearl Label Crystal, Blue Label Profesionale, Green Label Emerald, and Black Label Espresso). Each has its own distinctive flavors, but the quality of construction and attention to detail is the same in each.
The cost of the cigar tends to be the downfall for many cigar smokers. If you are looking for a bargain, this is not the cigar for you. If you are looking for VALUE, however, this is the best of the best. The price-point is generally between $18 to $28 a stick, depending on the purveyor, but believe me when I say that the cost is more than worth it. This is the Rolls-Royce of cigars, and must be experienced, even if it is just for special occasions.
Another difficulty with this cigar is finding them. There is limited availability due to the small number of purveyors that are able to sell Graycliff.
If you consider yourself an aficionado in any way, put Graycliff on your shopping list, and try one. You will be hooked!
