daddym's Full Review: Gary McKechnie - Great American Motorcycle Tours
My sister in law and her husband always try really hard to get me stuff that I will enjoy for Christmas. Since I ride motorcycles, and am really in to them they got me the book Great American Motorcycle Tours, by Gary McKechnie for Christmas a couple of years back.
Great American Motrocycle Tours covers 20 different US destinations to travel to on your motorcycle. The locations are chosen for their scenic rides. The locations are listed as runs, which means there is a long stretch of road where the scenery is just perfect for the motorcycle rider.
For each of the locations the book has a small map of the area. The map tells you how much travel time you will be on the scenic road and where to stop and where to ride for the most scenic views. It also has recommendations on how to have a complete experience, you can choose to do the entire run, or just part of it. It also gives recommendation on how long the author thinks you should take this trip for. Including traveling time, and times to stop and visit the areas.
Each location has an entire chapter dedicated to it, and the chapters will tell you what you will see and what to expect on the ride, it also provides information on area hotels, restaurants, shopping, bars, area attractions, alternate routes, where to pull over, places to stop along the way, and what to bring on the trip. It even has information on some indulgences, that is places to go or stay that cost a little more money.
There is also information for annual rallys at or near those locations.
There is also an information section for things such as local travel information including phone numbers, and motorcycle shops in those areas.
The book starts out in the New Hampshire and Maine areas of the country and takes you all the way to California.
Of course if you want to take the family and drive through these scenic areas that would be fine too.
I am actually really impressed with this book. There are several scenic rides that I would never have known about if not for this book. I also like all the detailed information that it gives, so that I know if I go on a ride to these locations I know I am not going to miss the best of what those areas have to offer.
There is a lot of great information in this book about these scenic drives. I have already done one of them and the book was a tremendous reference, and I saw things I would not have seen had I not had this book.
The book also includes a Forward by Peter Fonda
There are some pictures in the book, but they are small and not in color, but they give you a little idea of what to expect.
The book is paper back and a nice enough size that you could bring it on the motorcycle ride with you. It is a bit thick but not too bad, it fit in my bike just fine. I recommend taking the book with you on the rides so you can pull it out as a reference when the need arises. That way you will be sure not to miss a particular spot where you can see something nice, or stop in and eat, or what ever it is you want to get out of the trip.
If you are a motorcycle rider like me who enjoys a beautiful ride, or even if you just want to see some of the nice locations and views that our country has to offer you should get Great American Motorcycle Tours, by Garie McKechnie.
