We needed another tape measure for the office.  There is never one around when it is needed.  So I purchased this Great Neck ExtraMark Tape Measure (Model # GNS95005).


Description

The tape measure has an overall size of about 3” high x 3 1/4” wide x 1 3/4" deep.  The casing is yellow and black.  The yellow part is plastic, while the black is a rubberized material.  At the back of the case is a belt/pocket clip that is 1 3/8” high x 3/4" wide.  The clip is anchored into the back of the case with one screw.

The actual measuring tape is metal and colored yellow with black measurement markings.  The tape is 1” wide x 25’ long.  There are a lot of markings on the tape, too.  Along the top edge of the tape there are 1/16” markings, while the bottom edge of the tape includes 1/32” increments.  The numbers are bold black and include 1/8” measurements as well as whole inches, feet, plus feet with inches.

There is also a “positive lock” to hold the measuring tape secure.  The product is made inChina, and the packaging states to always wear safety goggles.


My Experiences

What I like about this tape measure is that the tape has easy action.  It is very easy to pull from the case.  The metal tape moves with ease.

The black markings are also easy to read.  It’s great that so many measurement options are available on it.  The end of the tape also has a metal lip that can “catch” on the edge of an object to help anchor the tape while measuring. 

The 25’ length works well for our office situation.  The measuring tape is kept in a desk drawer and used indoors, which is a good thing.  I’m not sure how this tape would do if exposed to the elements.  The top of the case has a gap where the two black rubberized sections meet.  I’m not sure if moisture and dirt would enter the tape measure if given the chance.

Since I’m exploring the negatives, I have to say that the slider switch that is supposed to “lock” the tape in an extended position so that it doesn’t retract into the case has never worked.  This tape measure will not lock.  It’s as if that slider switch doesn’t exist.  While this is an inconvenience (one likes a product to work correctly), it is not a make-or-break problem for us.  This tape measure sees light use was deemed not worth returning.

One more concern is the yellow plastic housing.  The rubberized areas of the casing appear rugged.  However, the plastic doesn’t feel as durable to me.  I have a 25’ tape measure at home that is all metal, and I love it.  That thing can take dropping and show no damage.

A positive feature of this tape measure is that since it isn’t all metal, the tape is not overly heavy.

I bought this tape measure from Staples Advantage for $8.46.


Summary

Would I purchase this Great Neck ExtraMark Tape Measure again?  No.  I’m not happy that the locking mechanism has never worked.  I also don’t like that the two rubberized sections at the top of the case don’t meet so that a gap shows.  If it was solely up to me, I would have returned it.
