A "SUBLIME" album

Written: Sep 30 '03 (Updated Sep 30 '03)
Pros:Great "Greatest Hits" album, combines best tracks and videos.
Cons:Its only 27 minutes long!!! Forgot great hit - "same in the end"
The Bottom Line: BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is great!!

THE BAND
Alongside other 90s US acts such as 311 and Rage Against The Machine, Sublime built their reputation by developing a sound which mixed and matched from various genres, especially rap, ska and rock.

Formed in Long Beach, California in 1988 as a garage-punk band though Sublime mixed up their punk rage with reggae and ska influences. The band released just two albums during its first seven years, finally finding a hit with the self-titled third. It was Sublime's last, however, as lead singer Brad Nowell died in May 1996, just two months before the album's release.

The trio which comprised Sublime -- vocalist/guitarist Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh, released their first album(40 Oz. to Freedom)in 1992.

THE ALBUM
This "Greatest Hits" album (Though only 27 minutes long) begins with a personal favourite of mine - What I Got. This is a great, mellow song with excellent guitaring and harmonies, made complete by its care free lyrics which speak of getting by with "what you got" and taking things as they come without worrying about the past. It really sets the tone for the rest of the album, and as soon as you put this cd on, you wont want to turn it off. More great tracks follow, with wrong way and santeria, two very contrasting hits but awesome in the ir own unique ways. Both combine silky guitaring and primo lyrics.

A great mix of ska/punk follows with tracks such as date rape and pool shark, but when the album had run its course i have to say i was left asking where "same in the end" had gone. surely this track would rate as one of sublimes greatest hits.

But despite this, a greatest hits album this certainly is, and to add to the awesome collection of tracks you get, it also comes with bonus video clips which are a must have for any sublime fan.

For anyone who hasn;t yet been introduced to sublimes music, this is a great place to start, as it gives you a taste of all varieties of sublime, from their slower paced mellow tracks to their quicker ska/punk stylings. i would definately recommend this album to anyone, whether you be a die hard sublime fan or someone looking for some good music just to "lax" out with and chill.
