Green Eggs and Ham is a cherished childhood memory. I remember how enchanted I was by the character of Sam-I-Am with his cheerful enthusiasm in promoting the virtues of this delicacy. I remember how amused I was by the grumpy characters dogged resistance to Sam-I-Ams culinary offer. I remember how enraptured I was reading about all of Sam-I-Ams efforts to persuade the grump to sample green eggs and ham- here or there, in a house with a mouse, in a box with a fox, in a car, in a tree, on a train, in the dark, in the rain, with a goat, and on a boat. I was particularly fascinated by all the characters Sam-I-Am attracted as he championed his cuisine. And I remember the delight in learning that the grump finally consented to try the food and realized, Say! I like green eggs and ham! What pleased me was that the jovial Sam-Am-I was able to bring a smile to the grump's face.
Reading this book again after all these years, these emotions resurfaced. Im convinced everyone who reads Green Eggs and Ham with their children will share these emotions. Like Dr. Seusss other books, it contains rhyming text so whimsical it will convince children that reading is a joy. And as in his other books, Seusss drawings are so vibrant and attractive, the characters almost seem real. The illustrations of Sam-I-Am and the grump particularly project highly amusing and vivid personalities that enhance the story.
Green Eggs and Ham also provides a wonderful message- dont assume you like or dislike something different until you actually learn about it. Parents can apply this message for their children to various situations from trying different foods to meeting people from different races. Even more commendable is that Seuss never presents this message in a condescending or heavy handed manner. He evidently realizes that in order to effectively instruct children, they should not be lectured but should be provided a concrete example in an amusing manner.
Green Eggs and Hamis such a flawless and exemplary story that I cannot think of anyway it can be improved. As long as children are reading, they will always revere this book. Lets hope that Hollywood realizes this and avoids messing the tale with a live-action version the way it messed up How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Cat in the Hat.
