If I have the choice and time I will always make my own frosting or icing for desserts but I am sure you can understand that there aren't enough hours in the day to do every single thing you want. Wilton's Ready To Use tubes of icing are an easy way to add color and texture to cakes, even if they are store bought. While I do tend to shy away from bakery cakes for a plethora of reasons, the biggest one is fruit flies. Yes, I said it. I don't care how clean a bakery is, hang around the doughnut case long enough and you will see them. Do you know how flies eat? They regurgitate a slightly acidic vomit that breaks down food then they suck it back into their mouth. The fruit fly, while smaller, does almost the same thing. Now, I ask you, is that something you want to consume? Moreover, is that something you want to serve to your family?

Now that's I managed to completely gross you out, let's get to the topic at hand. What exactly is a ready to use icing? In this case it is something that is ready to go as soon as you open the tube. You don't need to mix anything or add any tint to it. This only comes in the most basic of colors but you can mix them if you want to create new shades. If you do insist on buying store bought cookies, cakes or desserts and want to add someone's name to it or dress it up a bit, these tubes do a relatively good job even if you don't have much experience at decorating. You can use them from the tube with a coupler and tip or buy some disposable pastry bags and use those. Worst case scenario, squeeze the icing into the corner of a plastic food bag, snip off the end and decorate to your hearts content.
Even though this is listed as a "leaf green", lets not get fancy here, its green. You can use it for grass, hearts, frogs, balloons, green apples, leaves or flowers. This doesn't set up hard like a royal icing so if you are putting it on cookies make sure they don't get smeared. For cakes and brownies you can use any method you like to get the icing out of the tube and on to the item but if you want to use a metal spatula to smear or spread it on make sure that it is at room temperature so it doesn't rip up the surface or create crumbs in the icing. This shade of green is pretty basic and easy to blend with other colors. To make it lighter for grass add some white. To make it darker add some gray tint. To make great looking grass mix the ready to use icing with some white and spread it on the area you want to cover. Take a metal spatula or something with a thin blade to it and add individual blades of varying colors.
Each tube contains 4.25 ounces but you won't be able to get every bit out of the tube so don't stand there wasting your time trying to do so. The tube is enough to add names or embellishments to about a sixteen cupcakes or to do a nice strong border on a sheet cake. If you are going to try and use this as a frosting you will need two tubes but you will have some left over. How long can you keep this once it has been opened? I've had some odd colors that I have kept around for six months, anything longer than that and you are just risking it. With colored ready to use icings you may need to knead the tube a little if it has been sitting for a few weeks. This will ensure that the color is mixed properly and if its been exposed to heat that the ingredients are back in form.
One of the biggest problems you will have when using this out of the tube is air pockets. Lets say you are working on a cake and you are almost done and you grab a tube of his to add a couple of small hearts or balloons. Everything is going perfectly when you hear a sputtering sound and realize that your tube of ready to use icing just farted all over your cake. Sure, you can use a metal spatula to remove the glob of icing and start over but its unsettling nonetheless. It's also something that is avoidable. Using a disposable pastry bag can help to eliminate that from happening. In regards to the leaf green ready to use icing, it is a nice color that can be used for a lot of different things but cost wise, it isn't practical for larger jobs.
Since I've mentioned a few times that these arent practical for larger jobs I should mention the price. They cost about $1.99 a tube but that depends on where you are shopping. Michaels and Jo-Anne Fabrics both sell these but you can also find them at larger Wal-Mart and Target stores. For the price of two tubes of this you can make a huge batch of icing at home and tint it any color you like. You know exactly what's in it and when it was made but it isn't as convenient as walking into a store and buying it premade. You can buy this online year round at the Wilton Online Store for $1.99 plus shipping and handling.
You can get the 4.25 ounce tubes of Ready To Use icing in the following colors: 704-200 White, 704-236 Yellow, 704-212 Orange, 704-230 Pink, 704-218 Red, 704-224 Leaf Green, 704-227 Kelly Green, 704-248 Blue, 704-242 Violet, 704-254 Chocolate and 704-206 Black. If you are going to order these online from a site other than Wilton make sure you are ordering the Ready To Use Icing and not another product. The easiest way to avoid that is to double check the Wilton product number and exact name.
As always, thanks for the visit
