Frozen Corn on the Cob
Written: Apr 25 '08
Pros:Convenient in off season, smaller size is nice for kids
Cons:Always seem to come out a bit mushy in texture
The Bottom Line: We love sweet corn, and these just don't measure up. I prefer frozen cut corn, as it doesn't come out mushy.
Our family (and my daycare children) love corn. The canned version is okay, but I think that frozen corn is even better. We love the frozen Green Giant Corn Niblets With Butter Sauce, and from time to time I also buy the frozen Green Giant Nibblers Corn on the Cob.
Description
These are obviously found in your grocers freezer section, and they consist of an ear of corn, cut in half, with a package containing 12 total. The packaging is clear plastic, and it's very heavy duty as well, these don't get freezer burned easily.
Since these are only about 4" in length, the bag equals about 6 whole ears of corn.
Thoughts
We have cooked these in a variety of ways. The package says you can prepare them in the microwave or on top of the stove. I've never tried the microwave method, so I can't vouch for that, as I always cook mine on the stove top.
Stove top directions are very straight forward. Put the corn on the cob Nibblers into a pan, cover with cold water and bring to a boil. The cover the pan and lower heat to simmer for 4 to 6 minutes.
We have also cooked these on our grill, we wrap them in heavy duty foil, adding butter and parsley to the cobs, and grill them either on a camp fire or on our gas grill.
If you love corn on the cob, you might be disappointed in the quality and taste of these frozen mini ears. Each time I make them, no matter how long I cook them for, they come out a little bit mushy. I have even tried boiling my water first and then adding the ears to the pot, wondering if this would make a difference, but it just doesn't. They come out a bit mushy on the grill as well.
The corn tastes sweet enough, but I actually prefer the regular frozen cut corn to the frozen Green Giant Nibblers. If you happen to overcook these (which the bag warns not to do), the taste is even less palatable!
Living in Alaska, it's sometimes hard to find good fresh sweet corn on the cob. Occasionally I find an excellent batch, and we eat it until we are sick of it. But in the winter when corn is out of season, the only way to enjoy corn on the cob is to buy the frozen variety.
The small size of these are perfect if you have kids who can't eat a whole ear, and you can close the bag back up with a twist tie after you've removed what you want. However, it would be nice to see Green Giant add the handy ziplock top to their bags.
I have found a brand of sweet corn that is superior to this one, and that is a frozen white corn on the cob sold at Safeway, I think it's even the Safeway brand. It's much better, sweeter, and cheaper. And it doesn't come out the least bit mushy.
I firmly believe that frozen vegetables are healthier and better tasting than the canned variety, and they don't have to contain any sodium or other preservatives, which also makes them healthier. One Nibblers ear has 70 calories, 0.5 grams of fat, and 2 grams of protein. They are distributed by General Mills.
A 12 count bag runs around $5.00. These are occasionally available at Costco for extra savings.
