Pros:planes smooth, well built
I've had my Grizzly 12 inch planer for about 6 years now. At the time I bought it, there really weren't any other planers on the market that came close to it. The other planers didn't seem to be built as well, and they were priced higher than the Grizzly. The difference isn't as great now, and there are some good planers out there being offered by the competition at reasonable prices.

The Grizzly planer does an excellent job planning. I now buy all my wood rough, and plane it when I'm ready to use it. I'm basically paying the same price for rough oak boards that I would pay for pine at the local lumber yard. The planer has paid for itself with the savings on materials alone.
There are a couple of things about the planer that I don't like, one being the weight. This "portable" planer weighs in at 80 pounds, and since my shop is small, it doesn't have a permanent home so I have to lug it around. Yes, I do get back aches....
The other is snipe... If you're not careful when feeding in boards, you get a good amount of snipe on the ends. I pretty much add three inches to each board to compensate for snipe. All planers will produce snipe, but it can be pronounced in some. With the Grizzly, it's important to support the boards as they feed into, and leave the planer.
The thickness gauge is rather hard to read. The way it's designed it's difficult to see what exact reading your getting. The pointer is too far above the measuring tape so if you move your head left or right, the reading changes. The only way I've been able to tell is to measure the board after it's gone through the planer.
As for safety equipment, the universal motor makes lots of noise also so ear plugs are a very good idea. Because this planer also makes a lot of dust, it's also a good idea to wear a dust mask.
There is a dust collection attachment available that allows you to attach a vacuum hose to the planer. This would help collect the shavings before they pile up on the floor. Just make sure you have a large dust collector. I've filled my shop vac in no time at all while vacuuming up the shavings.
I've been very happy with this planer and would recommend it to my friends.
